My only complaint - the wildcat

After some more time to think about this, I still don't like running it, but if they're going to, imo it's more effective if they keep the pace of the drive going when they get set in, instead of stalling with all of the shifting.

This exactly. They waited too long to hike the damn ball after shifting. I'll bet it took 5-7 seconds after Montgomery was in place. That gives the defense a chance to get to the places they need to be.

One other complaint I have is, when it's 3rd and one (or less), why operate out of the shotgun? QB sneak is gone as a play, and you are having to go 8 yds now instead of a couple.

Guess that's why they pay me zip to be the armchair coach.

I was at the game, but my FIL watched it on TV. He said the announcers repeatedly mentioned that the ISU coaches hinted to them that we would see another QB (or two). Since Kempt was not even in uniform, curious if anyone with inside info heard that Mitchell or Purdy might get some snaps.

I don't mind the wildcat and assume we are laying film for some twists later on this season. But would have been nice to see Re'al in there on the goal line.

My only "complaint" is a frustration. When we held OU to a field goal for 34-24, it really bugged me that Kene had a first down if he just went south on a key 2nd and 3. Instead he juked around and got himself tackled 1 yard short. Then we hand off to Croney on massively important 3rd and 1 and he got dropped for a loss. Whar Montgomery?

Is there a reason this works so much less so far than when Lanning ran it? Teams knew 99% he was running.

A) Lanning was better at waiting for blocks to develop than DM
B) Lanning had at least some semblance of pass threat

Until DM drops back and throws a good one, teams will just bury the LOS on the wildcat.

I am not sure why this is being run. I don't question CMC on much, but this play needs to be ripped out of the playbook.

I'd say Rex Burkhead made it work pretty well in the last Nebraska game against us. I believe he almost got his head twisted off for his effort

Walters mentioned on the pre-game show that Purdy would probably play.

Funniest thing--since he switched to just catching the ball, and kicking it, the punts have improved.

I'm still mystified as to how they came to the conclusion that the rugby style was a good idea. Was a big factor in the first game.

I watched him at the CGC practice and he was crushing the ball with traditional punt style.

I think another case of having the SDSU game cancelled and not letting him get his jitters out of the system fully that came back to haunt us v Iowa. IIRC, his first shank was from the endzone. On the road, very loud and intimidating environment, and punting from your own endzone was not the time to rugby punt.

I feel like I remember reading that Montgomery has an incredibly strong arm. I don't know that that means he can sling it into D I red zone coverage. But maybe used as some trickery?

I would like to see a fast snap and screen if a team gets lazy, then if they run the wildcat with DM back, let him throw it. And if not, then do some sort of option/sweep with Jones. It has potential, but the coaching staff needs to get more creative for it to work imo.

It's game speed too.

Even look at the defense last week vs. Iowa or what they would have seen in SDSU. Oklahoma's specialists all fly around like they're in fast forward. It seemed to take a bit for ISU to get a quicker step in to anticipate what was coming.

I think the play would work better if it was run the way we ran it with Lanning. Lannings were mostly off tackle lead plays. Directly snap, RB or TE on the side he was running to lead blocked and they ran it off the tackle.

With DM, they are running a zone read type play. It's taking too long to develop with the WR coming in motion and faking the handoff. The threat of the sweep play isn't enough to create gaps in the middle.

If we wan to run it, get DM going downfield with a lead blocker and we may have something there.
