Is Purdy the guy?

West Virginia will be a test. I get the feeling they will use our defense. I'm pretty sure they were the first Big 12 team to use the 3-3-5. I think they'll spy Purdy and force him to be accurate downfield. He looked capable against OSU, even when coverage was good. Butler TD was a dime as well as Milton's catch down the middle. He underthrows it just a bit because he doesn't have elite arm strength, but accuracy looks to be more of a strength than weakness.

I hope they do. All a spy does is removes a pass rusher AND a pass defender, giving our receivers a bit of an easier time getting open. If Saturday is any indication, Brock will hit that receiver.

I don't get why people are so hung up on a freshman having one great game. It's not the first time that's ever happened. That being said I'd definitely give the kid the start against West Virginia and maybe after the bye week and see where you're at with Purdy. Kempt even with his faults won some big games last year for us and if Purdy falls on his face the next two weeks I don't see why you wouldn't sit him a gain and save the red shirt. Now if he goes out and throws for close to 300 yards and keeps the turnovers and a minimum in those next two games he's absolutely going to be the starter from here on out and he should be.
Cautious optimism is warranted, it was only one great game. But if we’re wanting to see more, how many great games has Kempt played? Teams win and lose. I’d feel better about Purdy’s game if we had lost 49-48 last week after failing to secure the onside kick, than I would any of the games we won when Kempt happened to start. Kempt’s OU game was an outstanding performance, but also more reliant on DM, Lazard, and receivers taking easy passes for long touchdowns (Stoops effect).

There’s a recipe for winning some games with a QB that is immobile with a weak enough arm to be hesitant, but that is accurate on checkdowns and jumpball throws. It necessitates good play around him from the OL pass blocking, DM making plays, a WR like Lazard, blocking by the WRs, good defense and ST, and mistakes by the opposition.

I agree I for the life of me can’t figure out what people see in Kempt. Someone who follows recruiting could maybe answer this but Noland is a better option especially if he is freed up in the playcalling. Is he afraid of taking the runs and stuff like that. When he does do it he looks much better at it than Kempt. Kempt did great things but at this point he doesn’t do anything the other side can’t do. He is also gone after this year. I’d put Kempt solidly third now. He is of much more use to us IMO as a mentor and coach.

If you can't see differences then I don't know what to tell you. He elevates the talent around him much more, and he just made a faulty OL look very serviceable by covering up some flaws with his legs and arm. He throws a nice accurate ball. He carried out fakes well, and even threw in some pump fakes. Those are attributes that a freshman doesn't normally carry. Do we need to compare where depth, talent level and the athletic programs are/were at the times back then to now with guys bringing up Arnaud, Tiller, Jantz? I would argue that the offensive line looked better last year for Kempt, that's already shown it's face earlier in the season, but he also had Lazard to bail him out plenty.

I'm going to go ahead and give the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt. They really wanted this kid. Jimbo Fisher wanted this kid. Nick Saban tried to land this kid late. Articles point to how hard this kid works in the film room, practice, etc. Butler's comments that were pointed out somewhere either on here or twitter tells me all I need to know. This kid gets it. He's a freshman, I'm sure he'll make mistakes, but his floor is a lot higher than other said QB's. Those guys are great, they are mature, they have played well. But stick him in with a better floor and a much higher ceiling, I like our odds for the season to play out. Put DM next to him and see what happens.

Do those people also think that OL was one of our better OLs? I mean, they too won 8 games while pass blocking for an immobile QB.
I'm not saying it's the best line of thinking, just that QBs generally get the credit for wins and blame for losses.

Would I remember Jared Barnett nearly as much if he didn't win against #2 Oklahoma State? Hell no. But it happened.

I think ISU has three good QBs right now who each offer a little something different. Kempt is the stabilizing force and steady performer. His teammates rally around him; there's always something to be said for the intangibles guy. Noland is the big arm and the guy who can stretch the field for the offense. Purdy is the best runner of the bunch and he can sling it a bit, too. My first inclination would be to give Purdy another start and let him try to lock down the job. If it was only Purdy or Zeb I think it would be a slam dunk decision to start Purdy again. But if Kempt is healthy and ready to go? We all know how much this coaching staff thinks of him, and that complicates thingas a bit.

I know what the staff thinks about him I Justin don’t think he gives us the best chance to win.

This is the small minded view I’ve chalked it up to. I and everyone will be forever thankful for the wins he brought us but looking at him he is a decent QB. In the Big 12 we need a good QB. Noland and Purdy both are more good QBs. They also are going to be here for the future.

Did Zeb get hurt or just benched?

I don't think Zeb got hooked. I think they planned to play them both and Purdy got hot.

I think Sam Richardson could have been very good. The problem was that he got hurt and then the offense around him took a dive.

Sam also had an OC that micro-managed him into the ground.

Purdy starts. No question. Noland is his capable backup.

I love the legend of Kempt as much as anyone but even if he comes back I see him assuming a defacto grad-assistant role. I'd be kind of surprised if he plays meaningful minutes again.

Unless he's out with an injury the rest of the year we'll see Kempt play meaningful snaps again. A lot will happen in the next six possibly seven games.

This.

It’s gamesmanship on Coach’s part saying there is a question in the starter. Kempt and Zeb should only see another snap this year if Purdy is hurt, or for some reason takes a massive step backward. And it would need to be pretty massive because he’s miles ahead of the rest of the QB room. KK can lead from the sidelines, Zeb can too.

And to those questioning a redshirt from Purdy - all I have to say is - LOL :D That’s some funny sh**.

That's awesome. Two great QBs are better than one. I would start Kempt if he is healthy but have Purdy ready to go if we need a change of pace. If we can find a way to preserve Purdy's redshirt and still win games, we should do it.
No no no to the redshirt! Matt Campbell peaches on his recruiting trips that you will get playing time if you earn it. Can you imagine CMC calling Purdy into his office going hey man I know you have been playing great and won newcomer of the week, but we are going to have to redshirt you?

This sets a bad precedent and why would a recruit believe CMC the next time he tells them they can earn playing time as a freshman? If Brock is the best QB you play him. You don’t make him redshirt. He could be the deference between a 6 win season and an 8 win one.

Lastly let’s say Brock is the next great thing (sample size so this is super speculation). If you Red shirt him you may only have him for 2 years before he can enter the draft. Wouldn’t you want him for 3? I’d rather have option 2.

I just got done rewatching the game from Saturday (swamped at work this morning, clearly) and it is quite clear that Purdy has to be the starting QB for this team moving forward, as long as he stays healthy. This isn't a knock on Kempt or Zeb, it's just clear that he is the best playmaker out of those 3 options, and is leading an offense that was desperately in need of another playmaker.

I understand the "It's only one game, don't overreact!" mindset, but seriously, watch the game and tell me how Kempt or Zeb makes those plays to win the game. It just wouldn't have happened. So it is the freshman's job to lose as far as I'm concerned. And the thought of redshirting him, again barring injury, is laughable.

I loved what I saw from the kid and can't wait to watch him against WVU!
