in which it is no longer considered an upset when Iowa State beats schools like Oklahoma State, West Virginia etc and in fact there could come a time when it is considered an upset for Iowa State to lose to schools like that.

I'll be honest - I never thought I'd see it a few years ago. What changed was the influx of cash from the Big XII and private donations which allowed major stadium and facilities upgrades and the athletic director making a home run hire in Campbell. When you look at Purdy for example he had visits to some big time programs but chose Iowa State. I'm sure when Campbell was interviewed for the job he took a look at the facilities he realized he could showcase those to recruits and make use of them to develop his players. Combine those facilities with a top notch coach and the program is on the rise - and the rest of the Big 12 schools know it.

This was an upset because we had 3 losses.

The most impressive thing about Campbell's the years in Ames is that every year his coaches has adapted the plan to find something that works, and the team plays markedly better once they figure them out.

Think about how rare that is in college football. Most coaches have a "system" they recruit to, and that is their brand. The only coach that comes to mind who does what Campbell does is Snyder at KSU. Their system is "just win, baby" and you dread playing them at the end of the year when they've figured things out. That's exactly what you need at a school like ours.

For many years, it was so hard for Iowa State to recruit quality defensive linemen and quarterbacks. CMC comes in and we have more talent and depth in those positions than I can ever remember.

When we had upsets in the past, they often felt like flukes. That is no longer the case, the quality of our football team is on another level now. We are legit.

Color me shocked that not recruiting the Texas leftovers has started to pay dividends. I've been screaming for Iowa State to shift their recruiting efforts to the Midwest for years, especially in the trenches.

Talking to Earl Bruce and John Majors years ago they basically said that they didn't consider staying at ISU and they maybe should have? It would not have been easy but it would have been their legacy and they should have considered it more seriously. All I want Matt Campbell to do is consider staying just until he "Bill Snyders" into the good night.

I think the current state of the program shows the effect of having the right coach.

From CPR to CMC, the only change was the coach - and the effect is amazing. Now the question is how long will he stay?

Was lucky enough to pick WV as the game to attend this year. Mrs. NorCal, who is not an alum and had never been, attended and was amazed at the atmosphere and the entire scene. I kept pointing out all the freshman who are playing key roles. I am on here regularly and follow all of this too closely and even I can't keep up with all the new guys we are using in key situations. I have never seen depth like this on an Iowa State team. This is a lot of fun.
