What changed was the influx of cash from the Big XII and private donations which allowed major stadium and facilities upgrades and the athletic director making a home run hire in Campbell. When you look at Purdy for example he had visits to some big time programs but chose Iowa State. I'm sure when Campbell was interviewed for the job he took a look at the facilities he realized he could showcase those to recruits and make use of them to develop his players. Combine those facilities with a top notch coach and the program is on the rise - and the rest of the Big 12 schools know it.
