So Judge beats Straw 10-4 in the exhibition. Thoughts on the outcome of that particular match?

agreed. Prob the lone match that didn’t go what people expected. And it came in the last seconds of overtime. Excited to see how they will do in the cyclone open in 2 weeks

Wonder if crablegs will watch the video:rolleyes:
Nope, watching Straw is always a painful thing to do.

However, it is now clear that Straw has not made progress that we hoped since last season and there is no longer any doubt whether or not Carr should start.

Straw was wrestling through an illness. Not really an excuse, but could explain why he didn’t have the energy he usually does and why he was struggling to finish his shots.

That was never really the question IMO. Carr has been able to bonus him pretty easily. Carr is on a completely different level. The question is do you burn his redshirt in a year when nolf will be in his bracket..or do you give him a year to sit and go for the title next year? There is no question he is the best kid on the entire team..

I'm not reading too much into the results. Weird things happen when teammates wrestle because of the familiarity.

I thought all of the guys wrestled hard and looked to be in good shape. Nobody got gassed and completely fell off a cliff which can sometimes happen first time down to weight and early in the year.

I agree that Carr being the best was never in question. But we have seen signs in the past that Straw could be competitive. My thought was if Straw could improve to be a top 20 wrestler, then we would not need Carr. However it is now painfully obvious that we have a huge hole at 157 and need him.

Carr is very good, but he’s not winning 4 titles regardless of Nolf. That should not be a factor. After Nolf graduates, PSU slides in Berge who just beat Carr.

A huge hole? He was a match away from making the NCAA tournament.

Depends on expectations. Used to be a time when just making the NCAAs would have been a hole. It was about the podium and points. So I guess it depends on how you view the program.

I’m on the fence about Carr wrestling this year. I’ve always been a huge proponent of redshirting for a variety of reasons; school, adjusting socially, physical development. Those things don’t seem to be important these days as these kids come ready to roll from day 1. Having Nate Sr on campus is interesting as I’m sure he’s going to be a big part of making the decision.

A wrestler's season results can be determined during wrestle-offs - National Champ and wrestle-off loser the following yearJohnny Thompson (OSU)

Talking about over reacting based on one wrestle-off. Not saying Straw will be on the podium but this result has zero impact on my thoughts of him as a wrestler. He is one of the hardest workers on the team and I expect him to dominate the Cyclone Open in 2 weeks. Obviously, something was off either preparation, weight, injury, illness, doesn't really matter what. Now if he comes out flat at Cyclone Open then I would start worrying about his future. Is he the most talented? No, but he has shown the ability to beat several top 20 wrestlers.

My opinion is also based off of his entire career. The wrestle off to me just proves he’s no better than he was last year. Which was ok, but a borderline NCAA Q at best.

Johnny Thompson was an NCAA champ the year before he lost the wrestle off.
