I wouldn’t fault Campbell at all for going to Ohio State.

But, “dream job” or not, I question the intelligence of anyone that would chose to go to that dumpster fire of an organization in Cleveland. I get Iowa State isn’t a top tier program, but it’s still a school that’s sunk a ton of money into facilities, has a fanstastic and loyal fan base and is consistently considered one of the best placses to live/raise a family. The Cleveland Browns organization is a ******* disaster. They’re a trash organization, they have a front office that makes awful ******* decisions, they have a pretty awful fan base, I don’t see them giving Campbell full front office control of who gets signed, etc. (which I can’t imagine is something he’d like) and that job will be open every other year for the next 20 years if he ever wants it. There’s absolutely no reason to go there for anything other than a cash grab.

The 49ers were a dumpster fire before Bill Walsh arrived. The Cowboys were trash before Jimmy Johnson. The Bears stunk before Ditka. The Seahawks achieved little before Holmgren... Seeing a pattern here?

The 49ers went to the playoffs 3 of the 9 years before Walsh. The Cowboys went to the playoffs 18 times in the 23 years before Jimmy Johnson, including 7 Super Bowl appearance and 2 Super Bowl wins. The Bears went to the playoffs 2 of the 5 years before Ditka got there. The Seahawks got to the playoffs 6 of the 11 seasons before Carroll got there, including a Super Bowl appearance.

The Cleveland Browns have been to the playoffs once in the 19 years that they’ve been re-activated in 1999.

Edit: you said Holmgren, not Carroll. The Seahawks had been to the playoffs 4 of the prior 16 years before Holmgren, but they had been on a stretch of no appearances in the 10 years immediately prior to him. But they were getting win totals of 8, 8, 7, 8 , 6, 6, 2, 7 9, 7 in that time. The Browns have won 10 games once, 9 games once, 7 games twice, 6 games once and no more than 5 games the remaining amount of their 19 years.

You do realize CMC is from the area and is a life-long Browns fan? It’s likely he doesn’t share your ignorance.

NEO has numerous wonderful places to live. The Browns have a good but starved fan base. Haslam is a bad owner (and crook) but the organization just hired one of the better GMs and football wise is well set up for a competent coach to be a local hero. For a local guy, that’s got to have a lot of appeal.

We wish it wasn’t anything but a cash grab. I think he’ll be at ISU for awhile, but there’s merit to thinking it’s not about the money.

Sign me up for some of that! I’m on board now!

When is the next time he talks to the media so Pandy or someone can ask him about it?

I'd actually think CMC would rather be the coach of the Browns than OSU. No idea if they'd even offer him, but as much as I hate Gregg Williams, I hope he wins a bunch of games and they retain him.

Guy I work with is from Cleveland and before this Campbell nonsense we were talking about the Browns and their potential. I was saying one day they would win the super bowl. He was angry at me suggesting it, and started naming off methodically why it would NEVER happen. I tend to believe him after my shaming.

This is the price of success. I hope CMC is here for a long time, but ultimately that will be his decision. His name is going to be brought up for jobs each year, hopefully he stays until our program is established as a consistent Big 12 title contender.

Nice essay. What's your point? If you wanna get historical, the Browns have 8 league championships, 12 division championships, & 28 playoff appearances.

When was Iowa State's last football conference championship? Matt Campbell would never go there...

I'm amazed at the lack of self awareness here. We've already had two coaches go to the pros, and Hoiberg would've taken the Golden State job had they not picked Kerr.

No they don’t. That Browns organization was moved to Baltimore. These Browns were allowed to keep the name and historical data, but the organization that won them is no longer in Cleveland.

I just have no idea why he would leave just yet. Even an honest coach can't tell you he isn't looking ahead to next season and what returns and how the schedule will play out and not think this team could have a legit playoff chance in 2019. Who would walk away from that? This is all him, he is the CEO/GM of this team. He has no one to tell him how to run his team. If he walked away, I think he would be shunning himself with what ifs in the future.
