I just have no idea why he would leave just yet. Even an honest coach can't tell you he isn't looking ahead to next season and what returns and how the schedule will play out and not think this team could have a legit playoff chance in 2019. Who would walk away from that? This is all him, he is the CEO/GM of this team. He has no one to tell him how to run his team. If he walked away, I think he would be shunning himself with what ifs in the future.

I still think the problem is that we think of this in the context of typical, non-D1 football coach people. To become as successful as Campbell you have to be wired a little different. Ultra-competitive, extreme confidence in yourself, etc. You don't get to that point if you aren't. So while many of us can't see the purpose in giving up a multi-million dollar job with great job security for another multi-million dollar job with a great deal more stress and expectations, we also don't think quite like Coach Campbell does.

So is his agent the same as Kirk's? Get the buzz every good year to get the extension.

IF Campbell is offered an NFL job, what kind of deal do people think he's going to get? NFL teams are stingy giving out information, but based on what's out there, it looks like the average salary is somewhere around $4.5 M per year, with a median that's probably a little less since Belichick, Payton, Gruden, Carroll are very high.

Again, not to say that it would be the deciding factor, but a few people have compared it to the Hoiberg situation and the opportunity to acquire "generational wealth."

As it stands, Campbell will average $3.75 M over six at ISU. As a comparison, Dan Quinn and Mike Vrabel got a 5 year contracts to start. Obviously we don't know what kind of contract would be offered by the Browns, but the difference in money is nothing like Hoiberg had with the Bulls opportunity.

No idea whether Campbell would leave or not for a Browns job and the VERY HIGH risk that comes with that type of job. However, what I do like right now is the compelling sell for staying here that he has helped build and we are subsequently offering, which is a much lower risk team built for at least a few years of success and praise from a fan base. Just look at our team. We are succeeding right now with stud true-freshman QB, and the rest of our team is mostly made up of really good underclassmen. Sure, the Browns job is open here and now, but ISU also has a pretty compelling case at the moment too for him to stay, regardless of what we pay him. There will be other very good or even better jobs likely available to Campbell down the road.

Serious question: IF Matt Campbell takes the Browns job, how much of the staff does he take with him? Wouldn't he need to surround himself with actual NFL experience? If we could keep most of the staff in place and promote internally, that should significantly help soften the blow. Heacock has head coaching experience...

Hoiberg was heading to the NBA regardless of money.
I’ve heard JP was prepared to match the Bulls’ offer, but Hoiberg told him not to waste his time because he was so aimed at getting to the NBA.

That being said, Campbell doesn’t seem like the type of guy who’s after more $$.
I do think he’ll get another raise after this season to probably around $4 million base salary.

Wow, that's pretty crazy if true and makes me feel even better about what might be possible to retain MC. But I agree that based on what will be available between the two salaries at ISU vs. Browns, that's not likely to be the main factor.

Matt Campbell's bringing championships to Ames. 'Nuff said.

Agree.

And we are getting buzz now as we "climb"...only more buzz.

You go to a big school...sure, for a bit there is buzz...but then it's "Matt Campbell hasn't beaten Michigan in two outings....the natives are restless!"

Hoiberg seemed fine with it.

Wonder what kind of non-answer he'll give when Randy Pete asks him who he'd want to draft next spring after practice today.
CMC likes recruiting. Or has said as much in the past. I am not predicting anything just stating what he's said.

If he leaves for the Browns, it's not about money, imo, it's a new challenge he wants and in his home state. So in some ways, similar to Hoiberg in that no amount of money will keep him here.

Our only hope is that he feels something special here and he doesn't feel that he has accomplished what he set out to do yet. I just haven't seen anything in Campbell yet that says to me that he is in this in any way, shape or form for the money.
