I had another beer and thought about this some more. I like certain personal fouls. Don't get me wrong, I hate the dirty plays, and that is not what ISU is about. But a personal foul can get the defense pissed off and they end up playing a little harder. Plus later on in the game a receiver might think twice before going all out for a catch, a quarterback might slide instead of trying to get that extra yard, etc... The personal foul has both negative and positive effects on the game. Kicking a true freshman off the team for personal fouls is like saying "we want you to play aggressive, but don't play too aggressive." He just needs to be coached on when to lay off and when to lay it on, that comes with time.

Can't believe so many people are jumping off the LJ bandwagon. He's a true freshman. He will grow up and mature. Don't give up on LJ, he's a great talent. Rahshan Parker had that stupid personal foul in 06 @ Texas and he's grown up from that day. The same maturation process will happen with Leonard. I'm very happy to have that young man in Ames. He made a mistake tonight and he will pay for it.

I agree....he needs to apologize, serve his punishment and be welcomed back. If it happens again....then we've got some real problems.

Again... another case of nobody doubting a players ability... but rather his ability to be a valuable member of the team.. someone you can count on character wise.

two mistakes, and one very very large one only exemplified by the fact that he had already cost the isu defense 15 yards on a very dumb and avoidable play. Not gonna give up on him as a player - but maturity isn't gonna appear immediately after this evening.

In today's game, the personal fouls just helped our team spiral further downward in that first half. You simply don't give the other team more reasons to be motivated to beat you.

Totally baffled by the nonchalant reaction toward them here.

People wanting him off the team... this is so ridiculous I can't even believe I'm reading this crap. You can't take a freshman, fire him up, play fast, play hard, and then not expect something on a second ever road game. Everyone loves big hits and guys flying to ball; there is a fine line... He has to reel it in and be punished, but kicked off the team is so extreme I honestly can't believe it.

When I first saw the play I didn't think much of it. We are talking about a half-a-second here. After the replay, I thought much worse of the play and not having him as a D-Back the rest of the game made me much more angry about the play. However, is this really an infraction that would warrant booting off the team? I think that is a little way to extreme.

Doesn't matter. Do you recall the video that was posted about Mitch King being a dirty player? He is a good player. No matter how great LJ turns out to be, he's still going to be known as a dirty player, and frankly, he's kinda earned it. That hit on the quarterback was absolutely inexcusable, and I wouldn't have a huge issue with a game or two suspension after his mandatory suspension. Yes, emotion is involved, but someone running on pure emotion without something between their ears is a liability.

They can be one in the same. It was aggressive but stupid.
The stupidity cannot and should not be tolerated. A 12 year old player should know you don't tee off on a player in the end zone. Unless LJ is a chinese gymnast, he's a lot older than 12 and should have known better.

That is why I said that the personal foul can have both positive and negative effects on a game. Today it did more negative than positive. Again I'm not happy about the play in the endzone, but I also noticed that the UNLV QB slide early a lot more often after that hit than before it.

the idea that someone actually thinks he should be booted from the team is ridiculous...

The hit in the end zone was anything but aggressive...but all about frustration/stupidity.

Let me paint it clear so people understand.

He was being aggressive by going full boar at the quarterback. He was stupid because he didn't let up. I don't think there was time in that half-a-second for him to consider himself being frustrated.

I'm amazed at the animosity shown towards him. It was a very very stupid play, it definitely wasn't a Vick spike to someone on the ground.

Nobody is really asking for him to be kicked off the team.

Why anybody would doubt that Coach Chizik's ability to select the appropriate punishment is crazy. He will most likely get his *** run into the ground and hopefully more. Make him work his way up the depth chart again.
