I was trying to find Jack Trice's number... I don't think they had them on their jersey's when he played.. But was hoping to confirm that this article is correct... does anyone know if Jack Trice's number was 37?

It looks like someone uncovered the Iowa State vs. Simpson program from 1923, which would have been his only home game.

This is the best research on this you will find.

Thanks... it seems like it is legitimate, but I wasn't able to find confirmation anywhere, like on the ISU website (could be there somewhere, I just didn't find it)...

@Kagavi is the know all with anything Jack Trice. It’s the most accurate you’ll find anywhere.

Oh - I didn't know @Kagavi was a CF member... thanks for all the work on this. Great that you were able to track this down. Wanted to get an ISU Jersey with his number.... but couldn't find his number anywhere.

Would be cool if they retired his number some day... also, would be cool if they could sell apparel with his number and give the money to his family. Probably an NCAA violation though...

Who was John G. Trice in photo below? If Jack? I did not know that.

Surprised this hasn't happened already. If #37 isn't retired, there should be some type of tradition for a team leader to wear a special 37 jersey to honor Jack.

The 100th anniversary of the season he died is in 2023... would be neat if they scheduled a series with Minnesota for that season and had some kind some kind of ceremony to honor him.

I know we have the stadium named after him... we don't have a lot of great historic accomplishments or traditions. Even though we have been playing football for 123 years. I think there could be a lot of fun things you could do to honor his legacy...

Putting his number in the stadium somewhere would be one... it would be cool to put 28 up there too.

Cleat marks in the concrete where the team comes out of the tunnel... "following the foot prints of Trice"...

Making a bronze copy of the letter he wrote that the players could tap on the way to the field (think clemson howard's rock tradition or nd's "play like a champion").

I just think there is an opportunity here to add some great traditions and honor a hero of Iowa State at the same time... it could add a lot to the game day experience.

Admire your attitude, but Kagavi is the source for all things Trice. He c can save you lots of work.

Josh (Kagavi) bought the estate of the captain of Jack Trice's team. He has a jersey that may have Jack Trice's blood on it. And he published a photo of a program with Jack Trice's number in it. That purdy much settles it for me.

P.S. It baffles me that Iowa State hasn't hired him to be their resident historian.

I don’t think numbers are typically retired in football, are they? Because of the volume of players on a team? Typically they’re just “honored” in a ring of honor or something, but the number is usually still available to be worn.

This is awesome. I have a framed #37 game jersey. Just adds a little more meaning to that jersey (although it is only 1 year old, not 100 years . . . too bad). I would love to see ISU do something special with assigning #37 to specific players to honor Jack.

The legendary mike o’connell also donned the three seven.... in all seriousness though, Jack Trice #37 should be the first name in beginning a ring of honor in JTS

Why is there not an Iowa State or National Jack Trice Award given to a player displaying attributes Jack Trice is acknowledged in possessing?

It's a little annoying that they haven't at least done the throw back jerseys for a few years now.

They were actually cool.

I assume you're referencing the Trice uniforms? (As opposed to the '07 CyHawk throwbacks).

It wouldn't surprise me if they hold off doing a Trice-uni again until 2023, near 100th anniversary of his death. They made a good attempt at the design, but being restrained on size of jersey numerals leading to the big white numbers detracted from its effectiveness. I know some fans agree with that, others don't.
