I had friends growing up from all over from soccer including some pretty small town kids. You get a lesson in life going to a big school, you get a lesson in fantasy at a small school. I’m a firm believer that the social aspect, especially in HS, is just as important as the test scores.

Gilbert is #4 only because of the Ames households, and therefore Ames support, in their school district...

Besides the school what else is in Gilbert? The Open Flame, a Grain Elevator, body shop, a couple other businesses and that is about it.

You still get families that will open enroll there kids in Ames though for the same reason, more exposure at a 4A level.

It goes back to the bad blood between the youth football teams 10 years ago and the big rivalry between the two schools. Saw a Gilbert coach get tossed from a youth football game upset on a call!! Yikes!!

Yeah...Gilbert is still a separate school district doing well. Too bad those folks have to send their kids to Gilbert instead of AHS.

I'm biased being an Ames kid. Graduated a long time ago. Loved the school and the high level of academic and athletic competition. Felt it prepared me very well for down the road. I've never figured out the desire for so many of Iowa State's coaches and Admin that send their kids to Gilbert.

That's great for Ames. But the top ranked school in Iowa is only the 916th best in the country. That is very disappointing.

This floored me when I moved to OH. The schools they consider “average” that people move to get away from would be right up there with the top schools in Iowa (based on rankings)

From the article:

Ames was ranked the No. 1 high school in Iowa with an overall score card of 94.69 out of 100.

First off assuming the methodology used was valid, do we really think it is a measurable difference to any Ames student being there vs a school with say 96.75 out out of 100 score?

I grew up and graduated from Oskaloosa HS, and currently teach in a small 1A (8 man football if that gives you an idea). While Osky isn't huge, it is a large 3A school for the state of Iowa. Both have advantages. I can't tell if Osky had more rigor or if it felt that way because I took several AP and DC classes whereas my school of employment has limited options for students to receive college credit.

I think the coolest thing I have experienced in my smaller school was when we got some kids in who had had a really rough go at it by the time they arrived. The first week or so they were ready to fight anyone and everyone, because that is the environment they had experienced at their previous schools. But after that they let down their guard and became a part of our school. They realized that they didn't have to fight to survive and actually flourished. I surmise that these kids would not have graduated from their previous school for reasons unrelated to academics.

I don't understand why people care where the coaches send their kids to school.

Why do people care?

If we had paid more attention to Hoiberg sending his kids to Gilbert, we wouldn't have been so surprised and hurt when he bailed on the final chapters of his storybook Ames life!

Just look at the evil that has overtaken him. Daughter at KU working for Toupee Bill, son playing for Tom Sleezo, and now apparently undergoing something more radical than gender transition surgery to make him look like a legacy Fusker.

It was all there before our eyes when he enrolled his kids in Gilbert schools rather than Ames.

Iowa students do quite well on the SAT. 3rd overall while Colorado students came in 15th.

That sounds good, until you look at participation rates. In Iowa only 1,000 (3%) graduating students even took the SAT. And those are presumably the top students in the state. Meanwhile over 2.1M students across the country took the SAT. In Colorado 57,420 (91%) of graduating students took the exam.

It appears Iowa prefers the ACT to the SAT, not sure why that is.
