I was surprised that the NCAA granted a waiver to the one year sit out rule for conference in school transfers when they announced yesterday that Oliver Martin was eligible immediately. More power to Martin, I am sure that he will get lots of love when he goes to the Big House. But my question is on what basis was the waiver application made? And granted? Seems to me that the NCAA is opening a door that will be used in future applications as precedence. Particularly in basketball where transfers are very much the norm now.

Its unknown what the reason(s) were that the Iowa compliance office and Martin's lawyers used for the appeal.

He declined to give specifics, and rightfully so, when asked about it at media day a couple weeks back.

Well, I'm sure there's no kind of impropriety involved. Or anything else that would preclude answering truthfully.

Why not answer the question? Keeping quiet about it only raises more questions.

Hes a 20 year old kid that, based on how his recruiting went and comments by local media, is extremely private.

If he doesnt want to say why he decided to transfer from UM to Iowa, that is his right and nobody deserves or needs to know.

Is it really that hard to understand?

This is particularly annoying when the NCAA also did this yesterday.

Agree! That was a really crappy situation too because the NCAA basically said since his mom went back to work that her medical condition wasn't serious enough to give him a waiver and is something like 5 miles out of the 100 mile radius too. She's a teacher and has a ton of medical bills to pay so she really didn't have much of a choice about retiring vs going back to work. The KXNO shows have talked about this story this week, just another example of how the NCAA is hypocritical. This kid has a legit reason yet they granted waivers for Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields which goes to show they will bend rules for high profile athletes going to high profile programs.

I'm to the point it's time to just grant kids 1 free waiver if they want to transfer because the NCAA has no consistency in how they handle these cases. I hate seeing kids transfer but I don't see any other way around it anymore if you want a fair process for those who have legit reasons that aren't being granted a waiver for them.

It's all over the board.. but to think that there isn't a correlation between the high profile programs and their high profile players transferring and getting waivers approved...
