Is he from within 90 miles of virgina tech? Looks like he's moving farther away from his mom? Not that i agree with the arbitrarity but aren't those the considerations they make?

I’m sure the NCAA will thoroughly explain why this decision was made why it was best for everyone and for the sport.

Here’s the thing.. this case looks bad on ncaa but there’s been several cases I’ve seen this year where kid moving closer to him and there’s a parent with a medical issue etc.. however his mom is apparently ok and the ncaa (right or wrong) wants to see that this kids mom will not do well unless her kid is near etc..

Waivers are about the kid. Not that I agree with it.

Wts, I just don’t see how OM gets a waiver. More playing time or an asst coach leaving isn’t a waiver approval.

Regardless of NCAA waiver approval process being hella shady, I don't quite grok why a student athlete would want immediate eligibility after transferring for reasons of caring for ailing family members.

Full-time academics is hard enough, add to that a second full-time job that is being a scholarship D1 athlete. If you've chosen to upend your path of career training and transfer to a different university for reasons of family health, immediately playing on the field feels incredibly secondary in the priority list.

Family health reasoning by the athlete, and thus rejection by the NCAA itself on the judgement of severity of personal family situations, should just not be considered at all if the waiver process is going to exist. I would rather see the NCAA remove the family health possibility altogether and say "We care about the athletes, and thus we encourage these athletes to not worry about on-field performance, and take of their loved ones instead."

It looks like Brock Hoffman moved from 210 miles from home to 134 miles. If the move is being closer to home for a sick family member, isn't there a rule that you need to be within 100 miles from home?

yes. i'm sure they were counting on the sympathy factor to deliver some wiggle room in the mileage requirement, perhaps on an appeal after significant public outrage.

Nope, it is 101 miles. This is 100 mile radius circle from VT. He is from Statesville, NC at bottom of circle.

With Oliver Martin finally declared eligible 3 days before the start of the season for TOE, I guess we can expect a Rasir decision in, ohhh, November.

I get that, but didn't the NCAA set the 100 mile rule for a reason? To set a clear cut line, rather than leave it up to arbitrary decisions? It seems like they are attempting to get rid of some of the "randomness" that is associated with their eligibility rulings. A side effect of that is this Viginia Tech player not given immediate eligibility.

Iowa didnt submit the paperwork until a few weeks ago. The NCAA made a decision within about 3-4 weeks of getting all the paperwork.

It wouldn't surprise me if the NCAA reassigned the team that was reviewing Bolton's request to look into Martin's eligibility.

How does Martin get his answer before Bolton when Bolton's request was submitted first? Shouldn't requests be processed in the order received?

Not sure on that part.

Maybe they put a higher priority on football waiver requests since the season is approaching. Bolton was still able to play in the Europe trip, wasnt he?

If so, not having a decision on Bolton hasnt impacted ISU at all to this point.

Does it really make sense that Martin's request should be prioritized just because he and the TOE can't get their act together until the 11th hour?

Yes, it makes sense that football waiver requests would be prioritized over basketball ones, IMO.

What disadvantage is being placed upon ISU basketball and/or Bolton since a decision hasnt been made yet on his waiver?

The disadvantage would be the team's ability to plan and practice with the known starters. I'm sure sooner or later you need to know.
