I love Coach Mac but let's be real, does anyone outside of our great state and a tiny section of Texas really know who he is? This is about ratings, buzz, and excitement. If (pick random school) had an ex-coach as the GameDay picker I'd be very unimpressed.
Every guy on the ESPN Gameday show knows him and knows he is a great talker. He also has been on both sides of this rivalry. Sure, he's not a big name, but most of the other options aren't either. Personally I think Gable and Mac would be great together as both played for the other and coached for the other. Both love Iowa as a whole and respect this rivalry. This is the country's introduction to OUR state rivalry.

If they go some random direction with it, like a celeb with no interest or affiliation, I hope they don't chose some jack ass country star or Larry the Cable Guy or something like that.

If they go this route my dark horse pick is jason momoa. He was raised in Iowa and he still has family in the Des Moines area. The only thing is, I cant tell if his family is either Iowa fans or ISU fans. If they are majority cyclones I could see the attraction even if he doesnt seem to follow either team.

I never watch game day. Do they wait until the morning of the show to announce the guest picker?

I don't either and wondered when they announce the guest picker. Anybody know when this takes place? Thank you

My bet is it will be some random celebrity out to support some new project they are working on. In this way of thinking, I think that Kevin Costner is a 10% likely chance so he can support his Yellowstone show while promoting the state of Iowa in general.

Do people seriously think Gable? The guy is 99% known for what he did at Iowa as their coach. No freaking way.

Look at the list here - there are a lot of really famous people, but there are also some real randoms. I could see us going with a military vet as that's been done a few times. I'd love it to be Niang personally, he'd bring it on the podium, and it'd be great.
There are literally Hawk fans that say the picker should have ties from both schools because Iowa is the team that's rated. lol
