Today's 5 year old's parents are increasingly steering them to (and rightfully so) basketball, baseball, soccer, swimming, running, literally anything that doesn't result in massive head injuries at exponentially higher rates like football.

Interestingly enough, I believe the highest rates of sports injuries actually are in basketball, and soccer has a higher rate of concussions than football. But can hard numbers withstand the power of frightened mothers? Probably not.

You really think the "Ugh, NFL is so soft now! Back in my day...." crowd is going to tune into that?! Lol, no way.

NFL is on it's way out. Sell your Green Bay Packer stock asap.

Exactly. And it's not about today's players. It will be a slow steady decline. Today's 5 year old's parents are increasingly steering them to (and rightfully so) basketball, baseball, soccer, swimming, running, literally anything that doesn't result in massive head injuries at exponentially higher rates like football. So the would be Todd Gurleys, Julio Jones', Dalvin Cooks, Pat Mahomes', etc. of the year 2040, they're increasingly hitting baseballs, shooting jumpers, and running track as we speak and will never make it to a football field.

The thing is there are types of athletes that are great for football that don't translate well to other sports. CBs and a handful of RBs and WRs are probably the only guys that have track speed. Hitting a baseball at the MLB level takes a rare level of skill that some people just never will have. There's a reason there are guys with manboobs are making 10s of millions in MLB.

The body types of the best NBA and NFL players have diverged wildly over the past few years. A big WR is the size of a PG in the NBA.

After football goes extinct and we end all bands, we should ban all Schools and education too.

There is a strong link between back talk and that book learnin', and I for one have had enough of it.

And if we're going to ban marching bands then we should just go all the way with it and ban music entirely. No half measures.

After baseball finally goes extinct in a few years can we just get rid of school bands, too?

I would like to see sources for ALL of that because I don't believe any of it.

Run of the mill sports injuries aren't the problem. You can fix an ACL. You can ice a sprained ankle. You can't reverse brain injuries.

Never one to not step up and admit I’m spreading bad info ...

I was probably thinking high-school athletes with the statement of soccer having a higher concussion rate than football, recalling a study that said girls’ soccer was at least as dangerous for head injuries than football (https://www.webmd.com/brain/news/20170315/which-high-school-sport-has-the-most-concussions). But, yeah, football has a higher concussion rate than any sport except hockey (and, perhaps, women’s soccer) (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussions_in_sport#Incidence).

Pure numbers of concussions in sports shows cycling, by far, as the most dangerous. Football is next - but baseball/softball and basketball are not that far behind (https://www.aans.org/en/Patients/Neurosurgical-Conditions-and-Treatments/Sports-related-Head-Injury).

Concussions due to band injuries are, sadly, not listed.

They certainly happen, especially at the more competitive end of it.

Ouch.

Usually it is the other way around, though.

I got whacked by a flagpole on the side of my head my freshman year.

Just to jump in because hockey is being discussed. That info is only to 2004. Hockey had seen concussions going down since they banned hits to the head and fighting has gone down.

However, they still deny that playing hockey causes CTE. Which is the stupidest take ever.

Not saying the sport is safe for head injuries. I still think they can make helmets safer but at least they have taken steps to help prevent more damage.

Yeah, i've taken a few flag hits to the head myself, once during a show somewhere. She was way off her dot.

Watched one guy blow out his knee at DCI finals one year during the middle of their show, was absolutely brutal.

I think we'll see a reduced talent pool available for football as kids get steered toward other sports, but it'll survive. It's just baked into the culture in some parts of the country. And until there's a significant decline in tv ratings or until someone isn't ponying up billions for broadcast rights football's going to be just fine.

It'll be on a respirator before you know it.

I can take or leave marching bands or pep band at sporting events. But to say they should be abolished because of Iowa's band allegations is twisted.

There should be an investigation into what happened to Iowa band members. I don't agree that this is part of the rivalry. Cruel behavior by ISU fans should not be minimized because the same thing happens to Cyclone band members in Iowa City. As my dad said growing up "Two wrongs don't make a right".

If the acts are true, finding the culprits is probably impossible- but the examples of deplorable behavior need to be publicized by both universities and leadership make sure the behavior won't be tolerated.

The Hawk vs Cyclone rivalry is great. Same as VEISHEA was an awesome event. But a few drunken idiots will destroy a great tradition.
