The thing that I think people are failing to realize is that Sullivan has a financial obligation to do what is best for HB and his family. Even if Jake wants like hell for HB to come here, his family has entrusted him and paid him to help Harrison make the best decision for his future.

Also, from reading this forum in the past it seems as though people feel we are entitled to something from Barnes. Simply being raised in Ames and born in Ames should have nothing to do with his decision. If our style, program, coaches, current players, or anything does not fit his wishes, he should not come here. I will be excited if he comes here, but will follow him all the same no matter where he goes.

Another thing that has bothered me about this situation is the weight placed on McDermott's shoulder to bring this kid in. I know people don't believe it, but we have been behind the 8 ball all along as his popularity has soared. McD did all he could, offering him as a Freshman and staying on the case ever since. How does a guy who has put all but no one into the NBA expect to compete with coaches who put 2-3 guys in the league per year? I am sure he will pound the proximity to home, and hometown hero angle into ghe ground, but in the end who knows how far it will ge tyou.

We will be fine with or without HB. His presence will only help, but people have cited Melo with Syracuse and Oden with Ohio Stateas examples of freshman immediately making a team legitimate. But if you look at those teams when those stars left, they have been in and out of the tournament since. I would rather build a team like Wisconsin without a bonafide star, but with a group of players who can play to together and a system that gets you to the tourny every year.

End Rant.

Besides Sullivan that no one has talked about is the current players. I thought HB was hanging out with Lucca and the other players a lot last year. I have seen him walking around the tailgates in the fall with the basketball team. I knew that if I was his age and was hanging out with Lucca and Brackins, ect. that it may have a big impact on where I go. They are going to tell me how it really is playing for McD (good and bad) - won't be a sugar coated recruiting trip.

I think this will be the determining factor whether HB comes to ISU or not. not Jake.

there is NOTHING academically he can accomplish at duke that he can't accomplish here. College is mostly about effort and you learn what you want to and work for./quote]

Not entirely true. A lot depends on his area of academic interest. For example Duke, UNC, Michigan, etc have business schools with a better national reputation than ISU and would probably provide more opportunities for work after college (if basketball doesn't pan out) if Harrison wants to live outside Iowa.

When it comes time for grad school, Duke & the like hold more weight than ISU. Sure we all know smart kids that went to ISU and got into grad school at places like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc- but the reality is a school with Dukes rep makes it easier to get into a great grad school.

there is NOTHING academically he can accomplish at duke that he can't accomplish here. College is mostly about effort and you learn what you want to and work for. Some pretty bright people have gotten an education at ISU. Any of you criticizing ISU's academics must have the delusion that Duke would have transformed you into a genius while ISU held you back. As far as athletics go what we have to offer him is immortality ala Hoiberg. Duke and UNC can offer him name recognition for a few years but in the end likely he will be reduced to obscurity and a footnote in their future media guides if he is lucky. Hang a banner there and ho hum. Hang a banner in Hilton and you are a legend for life. I am sorry, but he is from Ames, his mother works for ISU, his dad played for ISU, and he works out with the team. If that isn't worth something then I don't know what is.

Your college education is what you make of it. But its naive to think that having Duke on your diploma wouldn't open a few more doors... But the kid is more than likely going to be a zillionaire so it may not be that big of an issue.

I'm sure this will sound horrible, but if you can't even get a kid who lives 2 miles away from your school and you're in one of the best conferences in the country where you play the best competition around, then something is wrong with your recruiting.

That being said, I'm just selfish and don't see it happening.

What I think is funny is that Jake supposedly doesn't like McDermott's style of ball. It would have been the best for Jake to be in a system like that encouraging shooting and not requiring a ton of running since Jake's major weakness was that he was very slow and poor defending fast breaks.

Erik may never, ever had, or would have gotten an ISU offer. I think maybe he was considering walking-on here, but we never offered him.

Why would Jake tell a kid that doesnt fit at ISU or isnt good enough to play at ISU to go to ISU. If he does that it hurts both parties. Jake is an ISU fan like the rest of us. Dont forget who his boss is either.

I would recommend my kid go to Iowa if he had an offer from Iowa and not ISU.

Lets change this a little. If I played for nebraska and my wife worked for the university of nebraska and my kid practiced with the university of nebraska's team and we lived in Lincoln and my kid had offers to nebraska and kansas and duke and north carolina...I would tell him he should go to nebraska. yuck, that hurt. but very true as far as my feelings go.

I wouldn't recommend my kid go to Iowa. I'd let him make up his own mind, but if my kid was raised like I was (which I'm assuming he will be), he would wipe his *** with that suckeye offer and try to walk-on for the 'Clones baby.

If that's the case my opinion changes. In his interview today, Jake made it sound like ISU offered May, as well as Iowa, and Jake told him to go to Iowa.

Thats why they have loans, so lack of money doesn't screw your life up at age 18.

Loans screw up your life at 30.

Harrison Barnes would start and be a star for any team he goes to. Look back and every top 10 player from the past 4 years and tell me if there is one that didn't start and score at least 10 a game

He's not just another star at Duke. He would be their superstar and top rated player they have signed in years

OK, I'll do your homework for you. Just look at the Top recruits on Rivals from 2005, 2006 and 2007. Duke got the # 2 player in the country from 2005 (McRoberts), the # 11 player from 2006 (Henderson) and the # 5 player from 2007 (Singler).... so HB wouldn't necessarily be their top recruit in years. McRoberts also didn't get drafted until the 2nd round in 2007 and has since gone back and forth between the NBDL and the NBA. Duke is no sure path to the NBA.

Rivals.com Prospect Rankings

Teams like Duke and Kansas have had as many as 10 McDonald's All-Americans on their roster at one time. Not all of those guys get drafted. Not even close. In 2004, Iowa State had just as many guys on an NBA roster (Fizer, Cato, Shirley, Vroman, Tinsley and Hoiberg) as KU did (6) and almost as many as Duke did (9). ISU has had exactly one McDonald All-American and he ended up being the #4 pick in the 2000 draft. So if you are an elite player, I could make a case that you have a better chance of getting drafted by going to Iowa State than by going to KU or Duke. It comes down to playing time. Right now Brackins is getting tons of it. If he were at Duke, do you think he'd get as many minutes to work on his game?
