Here are a few of my thoughts on this game:

1) I was afraid initially that I had made Discy’s role too important. I thought his decision to cooperate with the innos was really a nail in the coffin for the mafia. If he had planned to side with mafia from the start the game could have been much different. However, I think PSY put pressure on Discy to play it that way.
2) PSY played really well this game. Coordinating where the bonetruckle went, driving discussion for innos, and putting pressure on Discy.
3) The mafia had crummy luck from the start. I was afraid Farnsy would get clapped like he did. North with the wrong PM hurt. Then having two night kills blocked really put them behind.
4) When I did the randomizer for the obscurial, it hit Clonies. Of course I switched it to Cubs since he was banned.

I hope everyone had fun at least!

I think it all comes down to luck. Had Farnsy not been clapped, Cubs not being banned, Discy not revealing his role, or mafia getting their hits in, this game would have been much different.

Good job, even if I was unfamiliar with any of the characters or hints people were dropping.

@bsaltyman and any other past mayors:

There was a comment made early in the game by someone who believed roles (mafia, special mafia, inno, special inno) were being assigned by the mayors. And a past player spent a lot of time venting about never playing again if he didn't get assigned a mafia role at some point.

Here's my point of confusion: when I first started playing, I was told that the roles were were assigned via randomizer. I thought that was the way they have always been...with the exception of one game mayored by Rulzzz where he built a "super mafia" by selecting the mafia, then randomizing the rest of the roles. His reason, iirc, was that he wanted to see what they could do, and he told us that was what he had done after the game was over.

Am I naive in thinking that the roles are randomly assigned?

I always randomized roles when I mayored. Even if it led to really stacked or really noobish mafias.

I used random.org to assign all of the roles, except for MJ. MJ had asked me ahead of time to be a regular inno. I remember thinking “oh no” both when JM and Farnsy were selected to the mafia. I think roles should be random though to make it fair.

Okay so the dilemma here, if I were to host a new game, should we make it more of a murder mystery style or more of a clue style? I think Clue lends itself a little bit better towards forum format and playing out over a few days whereas everything I’ve seen online regarding a murder mystery is more of a one shot timeframe.

Granted maybe a few hours of drinks and CF banter in character would be fun regardless of how it plays out? I’ve just seen that you need a little freedom to mingle and a forum is kind of too broad (although it’d be great for the “dinner portion”).

You could always post in character through a Clue format too.

Clue would be fun. People could chose to take certain actions each day, like “explore the kitchen” to hunt for clues. I was also thinking “among us” would be fun as well, where people would have to move to certain rooms and complete tasks.

We've done what we called lightning mafia where the entire game takes place over a few hours. We played in the evening to make it work for everyone. If we did a murder mystery game like that, I'd be all for it.

I think they're randomized 95% of the time. One early comment from mj (I think) was "I don't know this theme. You think the mayor would assign me a special role?" That kind of thinking is not smart IMO. Mayors don't/ shouldn't care about that.

I had the opportunity to participate in a live action murder mystery. I played a "bubble dancer" (think Sally Rand with bubbles instead of fans). A friend who was part of ACT in Ames loaned me a slinky 40s era floor length gown with a plunging cleavage and a slit most of the way up the right thigh. It was blood red. I accessorized it with a platinum blonde wig & a red feather boa, dark red lipstick and spike heels. It was all Jean Harlow down to the high squeaky voice I used. There were other people participating that I knew from work that didn't know I was going to be there, and they didn't even recognize me! My unscripted role was to prevent a certain man from getting together with a certain woman (my rival, a younger dancer) to discuss the murder (and other things). I played it to the hilt and ended up winning the best unscripted character and best costume awards from the rest of the "cast". I've always wanted to do something like that again. If you ever have the opportunity to do one of these live and in character, do it...and let yourself go.

I should note that this was back when I actually had a figure. ;)
