We almost beat the Kentucky super-team that went on to win a national title in the Royce year. Just because you come close to beating a very good team doesn't mean you replace what they did on the bracket
Lol, they didn't almost beat Kentucky that year. We hung around for maybe 15-20 minutes, Royce had his "I'm the best player in this arena" outburst and then the talent took over and made us look silly.

"The Cyclones couldn't contend with Kentucky's overwhelming offense and smothering defense after rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit to 42-all with 16:23 left."

That is about as good of a shot as anybody had against that Kentucky team.

I will remind you we went 3/22 from three during that game and eventually lost 87-71.

Shoot 45% from three (10/22) and we win that game 92-87.

We had a shot. We just went cold. Chris Allen was 1/10 from deep and bricked us out of the game. :/

Part of that was their length on defense.

I do get a little amusement out of the "I couldn't enjoy the season" posts of that 2019 year.

I don't view that year as a smashing success, and it's obvious now that the issues that team had were a harbinger of things to come. Certainly some unpleasant moments (loss at Iowa, home loss to KSU, February fade, OSU). But they still gave us some good moments that I got some enjoyment from:

  • Stomped Mizzou (eat a ****) in one of the first home games.
  • Good showing in Maui. Introduced THT to the world, and Tyrese to Bill Walton.
  • Big home win against KU
  • Win at Texas Tech
  • Ran Ole Miss out of their own gym
  • Win at KSU
  • Big 12 tournament championship (always fun for ISU fans regardless of the circumstances)

To me, the game that sticks out the most was that TCU home game early in February. We start out well, and it looks like we're going to coast. Then Dixon makes adjustments, and they have their way with us the rest of the game. Seeing Jamie coach circles around Steve (who was unable to stop the bleeding) was certainly a red flag. To me that game was the turning point of the season. The February fade coming on the heels of what was overall a decent first half of the season is where this "didn't meet expectations" feeling came from.

Yeah it’s been personal with a lot of these folks for a long time. It’s like they think if they say something that isn’t completely derogatory, or minimize every single accomplishment, pollard might see it as some affirmation to bring him back.

Steve’s a good guy. His rep in the business isn’t nearly as bad as the cf brigade wants you to believe.

it didn’t work, the program is in a bad place right now, and it’s his responsibility. He will lose his job after the last game, and we will then see what the new coach can do.

I’ll root for Iowa State either way
It is personal. I like ISU Basketball. ISU basketball is why I created an account on this site. Prohm cratered something i enjoy and care about. I want him gone. Beyond that he seems like a nice guy who destroyed something i dearly enjoy, and he did it in a time when people could really use that enjoyment and entertainment. The only entertainment now is the bewilderment at how bad we are. I spent Saturdays game updating my brother in law on how many turnovers we had.

Lol, ok, so we played them tough for 25 minutes. Getting outscored by 16 points in the final 16 minutes isn't "almost" winning anything.

We "almost" beat Purdue in 2017, Kentucky ran us out of the gym in 2012.

Actually go look at the Torvick average margin of lead/deficit. It was a -7.3 which was actually the 3rd highest margin of any game that entire season.

I remember watching that game in person with my father that year.

Kentucky was just flat out ridiculous that game, and I remember Calipari saying afterwards that it was one of the best games of the season for them.

On the T rank website that we are both so fond of they scored a 98 for that specific game. ISU scored an 84, so we actually played pretty well but just ran into an absolute juggernaut.

The previous game against UCONN (we scored a 99 on T Rank) was just an absolute masterpiece. It was great to watch us soundly beat a "name" team like that in our return to the tournament after so many years away.

Maybe Fred wants to come back. Had rough road with Bulls (although made a lot, lot, lot of $) and has been pretty poor at Neb. Ames seems like a positive place for him.

I'll agree on all those points except Maui. We lost to a horrible Arizona team then beat the worst team in the Big 10 and another team that didn't even make the postseason. That could have been so much more exciting had they simply beat Arizona but they ended up not even playing an NCAA tourney team that entire tourney.

That Arizona game is what started my frustration with that year. We played horribly and choked that game away and ended up in the losers bracket right away. I think we coukd have played Duke, Gonzaga, Auburn who wwre all elite teams that year if we won that game. It would have been alot more fun than facing a terrible Illinois team.

Yes it did.

I'm not going to go back and forth on it but I remember it being a thing.

'Hero ball' was also a pretty consistent theme around here with Fred's teams.

Under Fred there were only three people instances where they led by more than a possession under two minutes and lost.
Kansas (2013) Away McLemore bank 3 led by 4 with 2 minutes.
Kansas (2013) Home. Niang charge game led by 4 in regulation with 2 minutes.
Kansas State (2015) Away. Led by 4 with 2 minutes to go.

So no this scenario where Iowa State led by 7 with two minutes and then lost is a figment of your imagination.

Ya I wish they could’ve finished off AZ and gone to the winners bracket. But it’s not like it was a total debacle for us.

Fred would 100% come back but I'm not sure we'd offer him.

Texas game in Austin we were up 3 with 2 minutes to go. So not more than a possession. I can’t find the Tech game everyone keeps remembering. Hoiberg’s teams were 6-3 against Tech and never had in the lead in the last 5 minutes of any of the three games they lost.

Actually I did find it. It wasn’t Fred’s team it was 2015-16 when Iowa State was ahead by 6 with 2 minutes to go in Lubbock and lost in OT.

The game you are thinking of was at Texas Tech in 2016 when we were up by 6 with 2 minutes to go and lost in OT. It was Steve’s first year.
