Texas game in Austin we were up 3 with 2 minutes to go. So not more than a possession. I can’t find the Tech game everyone keeps remembering. Hoiberg’s teams were 6-3 against Tech and never had in the lead in the last 5 minutes of any of the three games they lost.

The bad TTU loss in 14-15 I think was to the last place TTU team, but ISU got down huge in the first half and just couldn't quite close the gap. The loss at TTU a couple years earlier (Niang's FR year) I think they were up with 3-4 mins to go by a few, but I don't think they ever had a big lead.

We played them tough and then we built a brick wall the last half of the second half.

It was actually from the 16:00 minute mark to the 10:00 minute mark. When 2-10 in that stretch and got outscored 20-4. Game was over.

The game you are thinking of was at Texas Tech in 2016 when we were up by 6 with 2 minutes to go and lost in OT. It was Steve’s first year.

No. I'm thinking of common themes during the CFH era.

It wasn't as prevelant as the 'hero ball' mantra but was still a thing.

I always blame any loss in Lubbock on those damn Under Armour balls. We never shoot well with them..
That and it seemed like Hoibergs teams had a motivation problem against bad teams in horrible arenas with 5,000 fans there.

Big Monday in Ames rolls around and you ate pretty confident they could beat anybody, the next Wednesday in Lubbock comes and you were worried about horrible losses.

The year we played at that high school gym while TCU was doing their renovations was absolutely terrifying, even though we walked out easily with a win.

Was that the same year we lost to South Carolina also? I just remember a few games like that, other team was severely outclassed so they slowed the gsme down and made it as ugly as possible. Those games always scared me more than Kansas.

Yup, it was Fred's last season. That Maryland game pissed me off as well because they did the same thing. Also lost in Lubbock that year.

I went to that game in Brooklyn. There were plenty of Cyclone faithful there to give some energy.

We just decided not to make any threes that day.

I know the discussion has progressed, but there are still people here that like Prohm over Hoiberg. That blows my mind and should grounds for expulsion from Cyclone fandom.

Name some names then, Senator.

I don't think anybody on here, if forced to pick between the two, would pick the former over the latter.

I think with regard to the 2019 season, it is about so much more than just looking at the raw numbers. That year, while from a raw record stand point, may have been better than the net average for ISU, was much more about emotions, both high and low, and perceived ability in my opinion.

While there were surely some fun moments that year like beating KU by 17, winning the B12 tourney (seemingly out of nowhere), and making it to the NCAAs, they were offset with lows like losing to the TOE by 14, WVU by 15, losing 6 of 8 leading up to the B12 tourney, and that pathetic loss to tOSU in the NCAAs.

I think a few other VERY important things occurred that year too. This was the year Prohm showed that even with his “good” teams, the home court advantage in Hilton that fans had come to know and love, was not going to be what it used to be. Additionally, Prohm absolutely lost control of the locker room situation, and it became toxic for the players. There were fights, Mike J injured his foot from kicking a door.

I was fully on board with Prohm’s coaching until that season. He showed he simply could not put players in the right positions to succeed, and couldn’t deal with the fallout of those on-court failures in the locker room.

This was a team that had the talent to do so much, if they were provided with the proper coaching and leadership. We ended up with a mediocre record and I believe the damage done in the locker room still haunts our team today

good post...I don’t get the conversation about this...Fred Took a bad program and made it great, steve took the great program and made it the worst in the country

In their time here free did a good job, and steve did a bad job...no fair minded person can disagree with that

the 19 team wasn’t as fun as it should be for me personally, they were so poorly coached, and just were not fun to watch because of that. Not the players fault, steve just can’t coach, doesn’t understand the game, and can’t get his guys to play hard for him. Not a personal thing, he’s just did a terrible job in his time here. I hope he kicks ass somewhere else, but he sucked here.

Under Fred there were only three people instances where they led by more than a possession under two minutes and lost.
Kansas (2013) Away McLemore bank 3 led by 4 with 2 minutes.
Kansas (2013) Home. Niang charge game led by 4 in regulation with 2 minutes.
Kansas State (2015) Away. Led by 4 with 2 minutes to go.

So no this scenario where Iowa State led by 7 with two minutes and then lost is a figment of your imagination.

The '7 point' thing was a general theme, not one specific game or situation.

You're thinking too hard about it.

In short there was a tendency to not be very patient with the ball lateish when a quick 3 was not needed.

ISU had a few nice teams with Fred and at least there was a consistent identity so can't argue with the results overall.

Maybe Fred wants to come back. Had rough road with Bulls (although made a lot, lot, lot of $) and has been pretty poor at Neb. Ames seems like a positive place for him.
Freddy is set to make 3.5 million this year to be mediocre at NU. Realistically to get him to come back will take some cash. Although I am pretty sure the donor base would be more than willing to help make it happen.

I think this is a bit diminishing of Fred's resume here no?
