My dreams have come true, a shoe store INSIDE a grocery store!? Game changer.

Yeah this is weird. But I have to admit that I impulse bought a pair of sandals at Kroger a couple months ago. It was a quick stop to get a few things after work so I was easily distracted by the aisles I don't typically go down. I also found myself thinking that if I really didn't like them, I could return them next time. But after weeks of them sitting in the closet forgotten about, I realized that would never actually happen. So I guess I'm one example as to why this is a thing. I'm sorry.

Seems like another desperate move by HyVee. They need to simplify. No one goes to the grocery store to buy clothes/shoes. I'm sure they get the occasional impulse buy, but I can't imagine this generates enough revenue to justify the square footage. If someone wants DSW shoes, they're going to DSW to view the full inventory, not an abbreviated version inside the HyVee.

Is it desperate, or an opportunity?

Was this planned pre-covid? DSW's locations are probably mostly closed right now, so theyre sitting on a lot of inventory. Hyvee could be getting a larger cut than they would be pre-covid to allow DSW to unload some of that inventory in a store that is allowed to stay open.

Good point. It appears this was a bit of both from what I find online. Seems like they are taking advantage of the opportunity, but also test-driving a future long-term partnership.

I'll just keep repeating this

Retail is changing, they are trying to stay ahead of the curve and will try things that fail. Retailers who aren't trying to innovate are the ones who will ultimately lose.

Side note: People seem to enjoy hating on Hy-Vee, I'm not sure why. They are an incredible community partner, offer great benefits, employ groups of need. If you don't like to shop at Hy-Vee fine, but I don't get the hate or people who seem to hope for their demise. Our community loses if the Hy-Vee were replaced by another chain.

My wife and I love Hyvee and have been loyal customers for years. She worked at HyVee from the age of 14 to 22. We were ecstatic when they decided to build a new one in MN not 1/2 mile from our house. We told everyone up here how great it was going to be compared to local options (like Cub Foods). We are huge cheerleaders for HyVee.

So, my comments aren't to hate on HyVee nor are they hoping for their demise. My comments are because I WANT them to survive and thrive. Sorry, but I just don't get why they feel the need to put clothing and bath/body sections in their stores. From what I've seen, it's not working well for them. Even prior to COVID, they were having to shutter their new distribution centers and were postponing plans for new stores here in MN. The bath/body section is insanely over-priced and our local store is already on the third iteration of the clothing section.

Maybe this is just them trying to innovate, as you say. And I truly hope they find a model that works. Their service and offerings are far superior to anything else we have here. So I want them to stay forever.

I dont think people hate HyVee as much as you think. They hate some of the changes they've done. People loved the previous deli dining room and the market grilles bombed that.
Yes you do have to evolve, like maybe a sushi station, but putting in a clothing department, optician, or shoe store arent the best ideas IMO.

Fareway is still growing well and arent changing that much.

What he said. Seriously, I could have written pretty much everything you said.

Last time I went into a HyVee barefoot they kicked me out. Now I can say I’m there to buy some flippy floppies.

How the turntables

Something tells me being barefoot was one detail but not the reason you got kicked out.

HyVee decided it had been too long since since they made a bizarre decision, so yesterday they announced they're adding...nail salons! I guess since they're called "The W" there are some nice co-branding opportunities with Wahlburgers.

Can't wait to see what random, destined-to-fail thing they put in their stores next. Dialysis centers? Mattress stores? Auto parts?

Nothing makes me hungrier than the smell of rubbing alcohol and nail polish.

It's like Hy-Vee is trying to make their stores shopping malls, in an era where shopping malls are dying.
