Bolton could be turnover prone, but I think a lot of that goes to the talent that CSP put on the court around Rasir and our lack of motion.

We lacked high % jump shooters so opponents didn't have to guard our 3 point shooters closely and could crash down on Bolton driving to the bucket. Compounding that was our lack of motion by perimeter players, opposing defenders can play a lot more attention to the ball if their guys isn't cutting.

IMO Rasir would be a better CG. It will be interesting to see what a new coach can do to develop Rasir's game. I would say the same for Conditt and Foster- the current staff did a pretty bad job of developing post players.

It's not just Bolton...it's the whole team. FT stats for the conference were posted in the game thread. The FT disparity between ISU and the rest of the conference is astounding. It's going to be really, really hard to win with ISU giving away so many points at the FT line.

None of the players really seem to know how to initiate contact and draw fouls when they get to the hoop. In addition to the scoring disparity, ISU hardly ever puts foul pressure on the opponents, so the defenders can play physically against ISU because they know they are unlikely to get into any kind of foul trouble. This needs to be a point of emphasis for whoever is coaching next year.

Until ISU post-Covid shutdown, our shooting % from 2 and 3 were nearly identical to our opponents. Our lack of physical play really hurt us on the free throw line and rebounding.

Season ending stats- ISU was outscored 11.1 PPG and opponents made 6.8 PPG more from the FT line than ISU. ISU attempted 277 free throws for the season, our opponents attempted 510.

Combined with opponents getting bonus possessions due to turnovers and offensive rebounds- its no wonder we struggled his past season.

Scotty never played with Lucious so you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Bolton needed to be used as a stop-gap pg like Scotty, not like they’re the past pgs he’s had. But Prohm is a one trick coach, and all he knows is to have an offense with elite pg play.

I guess I don’t remember Scotty playing PG. I remember Fred’s first year he had Garret at PG, and his second year Chris Allen(I believe) played the 1, but Royce was the “Point Forward”. Although I think they experienced with Allen and PG, and maybe Scottie as well.. but it didn’t take long for Royce to take over.

This is basically it. They tried it a little. It totally wasn't Scotty's skill set, and Royce was, well, awfully good.

Prohm is guilty of many things, but playing Bolton at PG this past season is not one of them. In fact, it was probably a good coaching decision.
My question for those people who say Bolton should not having playing PG is: “Who on the roster would you have had playing that position?”

My question for you is do you think there are different ways to use a pg?

There’s using Bolton as the primary ball handler to get the ball in the halfcourt and initiate the offense , and there’s Bolton at pg bring your offense. We went with the latter

Rasir was probably the best passer on the team, but there was really no one else who I would say was even competent when I watched.

Coleman-Lands shot 40% from three. That alone makes him inherently "competent."

Nobody after Bolton and JCL should be starting for a Big 12 team, though, and the other guys would be reaching their theoretical limits just being decent bench players.

None of these players should be criticized much if at all. First it’s a bad thing to do, second they played for probably the most incompetent staff ever assembled at the high major level of college basketball.

Not sure how JCL's 3 PT shooting is related to his passing ability but OK.

ISU was a very unskilled team this year. Very poor dribbling and passing. JCL could be an excellent 3 and D guy. Just have to keep the dribbling to a minimum as his Assist to Turnover ratio was 1:2.

Exactly. Our roster is full of athletes that can't really shoot, dribble, or pass at a very impressive level. The answer in my mind would be to play defense. If motivated to do so, I'd bet that the guys on the team now could guard people and rebound. Don't just trot back on defense when a shot goes up. Crash with everybody.

Press... grab, clutch, push, foul... refs aren't going to call everything. West Virginia style. With our current roster, Huggins would have won quite a few games.
