Priorities for the new ISU mens basketball coach?

Dunno if this has been said, but priorities for the freshman include:

1) Keep Jaden Walker. He came on as the season progressed. Not sure if he can be a PG tho.

2) Keep Dubar. He showed flashes of talent early and was usually in attack mode. Needs a year to figure it out.

3) Quickly determine whether to keep Blackwell. Athletically he belongs in the B12. Can the skills catch up to the athleticism?

I don't need to say keep Foster, plus that's been said in this thread plenty.

I wouldn’t be mad about losing any of those guys except Foster. It really depends on the hire though. They just can’t shoot it well enough.

You realize in order to improve from 0-18 the next coach will need to cut some dead weight right?

I think a decent coach could take the roster as is and "improve from 0-18". That's not a high bar.

Yeah, it's a twofold problem of both talent and coaching though when a team goes 0-18. Along with a new staff, this program needs a talent infusion also.

The freshman are a dime a dozen Big 12 bench players and not guys who are going to turn around a program. Its telling that they couldn't make any kind of impact on the worst team in Big 12 history.

There's some talent to build around like Foster and if Hunter stays, but the new coach is going to have to clean some house also.

I think if you just took the roster(any roster) and said we are just going to play defense and play games in the 50s you could luck out a conference win or two when some other bad team can't score.

Eh, there’s some decent pieces there. It was a mostly new team with a lot less time to work together. Even in a normal year this much turnover is hard to overcome. Obviously there will be turnover, but if a coach were to let everyone go and start over they’d be fired by the time the rebuild was done. A new coach could turn some of these guys around. We saw it with CPR and CMC both who took the previous coaches roster and won games with them.

There’s potential on this roster, it just needs a better coach and obviously experience helps get better. Especially experience together.

How about shot selection and hold players accountable when they take horrific shots. This has been a problem for YEARS, even when Hoiberg was here. Wil Clyburn was the king of throwing up some ********, contested fade away 3 with 27 seconds on the shot clock. That type of stuff has continued into Prohm's tenures. Players won't habitually take good shots if they aren't held accountable in practice and games for taking bad shots. This isn't a rant on the random bad one's EVERY player takes, rather the kinds of shots that result in going 5-25 from three with 5-7 of the long rebounds leading to transition opportunities.

We need a coach who can instill some fundamentals. Shot selection, team defense, and rebound positioning are completely devoid. We need to start from scratch and reteach what's left of the team while bringing in guys who will buy into team concepts.

Sure, I want to win but I want to watch a team that competes and doesn't bury itself in stupidity. If we start at with the basics the winning will come.

Can the freewheeling ********. It's an awful brand of basketball to watch.
