No. It’s not that. We will never have a season under T.J. where we fail to win a game or finish in last place in the conference. Under CSP we finished in 9th or 10th 50% of the time. Sort of amazing.

Really? It's hard to say right now since we don't know which players in the Big 12 will be back or not with their respective teams, but you really don't think there's at least a decent chance we'll be in last place in the Big 12 again next season? Now, let me be clear; I absolutely agree with you on the first part; no way we go defeated in the conference again. And FWIW, as long as we win at least 2-4 Big 12 games next season that is clear progress from going 0-18. But to state that we will not finish last again is a pretty bold statement IMO.

Welcome back TJ and family. Cyclone family for life.

I trust the judgment of Pollard and the rest of the Cyclone staff. I believe that we have learned that building the culture is the most important thing that a coaching staff needs to do for a winning program. TJ will bring back the magic to Cyclone basketball.

I do like TJ and want him to succeed here. I'm glad he went and got HC experience at a couple (very) different places before coming back here. Great recruiter and high character guy, and his ISU connections are known. We know he'll work his ass off here.

I will say that Pollard's video message didn't quite sit right with me. I don't recall him having to sell the fans this much on a new hire. His tone was almost pleading. If TJ does fail, combined with the friendships with JP and the media, having to let him go is going to be very messy.

Ideally, TJ starts winning and we forget all about this discussion

In a way, I've almost reversed my reaction to this. Pollard had the balls to go out on a limb and make this hire; fully knowing the crap he was going to get or accused of, the speculation due to friendship, and realizing it wouldn't be the wow hire his fans would dream of.
Guess I just have a little more faith in JP than some do. Because I think he deserves it from this fan base. Chizek didn't work, Campbell did. McDermott didn't work, Hoiberg did. It's not an exact science. Look at Quin Snyder.... basically flopped at Missouri and now very successfully leads NBA Utah Jazz. I'm sure there are other examples of 'fits' vs. resume.

Not really. Most people are able to rationally think through this hire. If TJ hadn’t coached at ISU, there is a 0.0% chance he’s hired here. So basically his resume outside of being an ISU assistant doesn’t warrant getting a P6 job.

That said, I realize that does matter. Significantly. Which is why I’m fine with the hire. But I fully understand why people are not thrilled.

There is a very small chance Craig Smith even had a shot at this. I’m guessing he wasn’t interviewing or thinking through this while preparing for their NCAA tournament game. Lets Not pretend we did some exhaustive search. This was wired to TJ the whole time.
Like you said fit and connection is significant and people can't just throw it out. That is what a lot of people are doing though. I can totally understand people not jumping up and down over this hire. Heck I'm not. That said we shouldn't **** on it either.

If I was running the show I would have handled this differently, but probably come to the same result. I would have had 5 names I would have wanted to interview. One has already said that they weren't interested. Two are in the NCAA tournament so I would have planned for interviews on Tuesday and a decision Wednesday.

That said maybe Smith was non-committal about our position and wanted to leave it open to Minnesota. I can't blame him for that, but I can see Pollard saying you know what you aren't clearly better and we liked the interview with TJ so we are just going to go ahead.

Being neutral is fine, but shitting on our new coach is a bad thing.

Does he fill in the missing gaps in the lineups with great transfers every year like we did during that long stretch of being ranked in the top 25?
I don't see this ever happening again. Fred was the pioneer in this. Now? We'd have no shot at a Royce White type. The blue bloods would swoop that right up based on talent alone.

Fred was the pioneer that people like Self saw make it work and completely changed how they viewed their rosters. Fred is now a victim of his own success because he has no shot at getting those same level of kids to Lincoln.

Well there really isn't a great way to find out if you hire the guy you wanted six years ago, one day into your search.

Look, JP lasering in on Otz puts pressure both on Otz and JP. So it has to work and probably needs to more quickly than any other choice would have had to, IMO.

I'm sure it is all going to be fine. TJ will work his ass off for ISU.
I agree with this post. I think many fans are going to look for a faster turnaround because of Otz's friendship with JP.

I’ve said previously that I thought TJ was a weird fit at UNLV. If he hits the ground running people will warm up to it.

Regardless of what we think, he’s the man now, and he has my support

Cronyism is the practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues

I've never disagreed about the process. But lets not pretend the guy isn't qualified either. He has been hired by 2 other schools as head coach. He's had some success. He's unique in that he has spent a lot of time at ISU already. Time will tell if he was the right hire, but we have to say that about any other guy too. Nobody is guaranteed to succeed here.

CW on staff hold-overs from Prohm staff to TJ's: Absolutely Micah Byers as basketball ops. Could see him keep Robinson too.

Byers is great.

I think we could use some new blood. But whatever, TJ is a genius.

Agree.
He should do fine. Nearly all coaches we’ve hired for 40 years have done fine, certainly when the initial measure will be against 0-18 in the honeymoon period. Nearly certain instant momentum.

TJ has merit. Potentially more merit to Iowa St than other programs. We’ll know quickly if this hire was based on confirming that, or just the long-standing but highly speculative belief by the AD that his friend would be successful here as a HC.
