I've never disagreed about the process. But lets not pretend the guy isn't qualified either. He has been hired by 2 other schools as head coach. He's had some success. He's unique in that he has spent a lot of time at ISU already. Time will tell if he was the right hire, but we have to say that about any other guy too. Nobody is guaranteed to succeed here.
Nah

Really? It's hard to say right now since we don't know which players in the Big 12 will be back or not with their respective teams, but you really don't think there's at least a decent chance we'll be in last place in the Big 12 again next season? Now, let me be clear; I absolutely agree with you on the first part; no way we go defeated in the conference again. And FWIW, as long as we win at least 2-4 Big 12 games next season that is clear progress from going 0-18. But to state that we will not finish last again is a pretty bold statement IMO.

Chip. I think you are going to very excited when you see the staff and what the roster looks like by mid-May.

I'm a long time and happy financial contributor to this site, but CW has admitted he isn't impartial when it comes to TJ and even though nobody really comes here for hard hitting coverage I do worry about how CF can credibly cover ISU basketball with this hire as well.

Well there really isn't a great way to find out if you hire the guy you wanted six years ago, one day into your search.

Look, JP lasering in on Otz puts pressure both on Otz and JP. So it has to work and probably needs to more quickly than any other choice would have had to, IMO.

I'm sure it is all going to be fine. TJ will work his ass off for ISU.
Maybe not names but there are a lot of great resumes out there.

Again is there someone we just flat out are ignoring. The search has gone quick, quicker than I would have like, but we all have seen the names. No one out there was clearly better than TJ. The biggest name is Smith and while he has a bit more national momentum it isn't much and TJ's fit more than equals that out.

Feel just ok, but don't crap on him. Neither of you are doing that but others are and I'm more speaking to them.

I think he will get a great roster. One because even the people not excited about this hire know he is a great recruiter.

But it’s the coaching that worries me.

The video Jamie posted announcing TJ made it pretty clear that he was the only serious candidate IMO.

I prefer to say default candidate.

That means in the hiring process someone is putting their thumb on the scale for you, not that you are a bad hire at all. Happens all the time.

Like you said nobody expects that here and Chris has already seemed to suggest he will segregate himself outside of the basketball team for the harder hitting stuff.

CW on staff hold-overs from Prohm staff to TJ's: Absolutely Micah Byers as basketball ops. Could see him keep Robinson too.

If that happens I'm going to flip over a shrimp sample table at Costco or kick a kitten (I would never kick a puppy)...that guy was supposed to be the big man coach and none of the big men have developed or really improved the last few years.

glad to have it done, happy to have TJ, he has a lot of advantages, passion and the want to be here matters, he will kill himself to make this work, and my hope is we can watch him make mistakes and learn from those mistakes, like our current football coach does....the last group of people that ran this program into the ditch never wanted to learn from anything.....really I am just so happy to have this last disaster of a staff out of here, that's mostly what is a relief

He was my #1 in 2015, but I wouldn't put him at the top of my list this time around. I'll rally around him though, and excited about the future. Definitely more Xs and Os competent than our last coach!
This is where I am. I wanted him over Prohm or any other ho hum mid major in 2015. And as odd as it sounds, I think it would have been better for Iowa St and TJ if he had got the job back in 2015. He would have a roster set to win right away, and he could have used that success to recruit higher caliber players right away.

The x's and o's has always been the question. Theoretically, TJ hasn't changed or gotten worse as a head coach since 2015, so I guess if I was ok with it 6 years ago, I should be now.

I thought he said someplace he would stop covering basketball if they hired him? Maybe I am wrong. Seems fair to just cover this part if true.

No coach was going to do well next year. I just dont think you can change out the roster that fast. TJ can recruit at a CSP level, and he cant be a worse X/O coach. This will be better. Whether it will be great is yet to be seen.
While I agree, UNLV can say the same thing.

That said, aren’t we hiring TJ because he’s one of the very few that csn flip the roster that fast?
