Got word from a friend in the Jewel area of a possible drowning of one member, two that are missing, and two that survived. Their boat flipped over at Little Wall Lake. KCCI is covering this story but has not said anything but just that law enforcement is on the scene.

My push notifications are saying a dive team is on the scene too. Hoping for the best.

Is it really windy in Iowa today, or there?

That's sad and pretty sure bad conditions to row in. The coaches should know better.

Seems like a pretty shallow lake the dnr says 13 feet deep maximum. But I guess maybe water temperature would factor in too.

I'm assuming rowing is a club sport? Odd situation, praying for all involved.
It is indeed a club sport. I was a member of it for a time when I was in school. This is shocking to me. I’m struggling to understand why the boat was in the water with such high winds. We normally wouldn’t go out in anything greater than 10mph. I’m hoping for the best for everyone involved.

I haven't been there since the 80s but I remember being able to touch the bottom but it was a very thick layer of mud.
It has been dredged since the 80's, I see dnr said 13'. That is at its deepest there still is lot of shallow areas.
Unfortunately it doesn't take a lot of water to drown under the certain circumstances.

Drove by earlier today and saw an Iowa State University truck with a trailer carrying those long rowing kayaks in the parking lot. Sad!

Yes, we were water skiing and I remember my leg getting sucked into the mud. Thankful to have a life jacket on.

I don't know much about rowing but they don't wear life jackets? And it's customary to practice in 45 degree water?

Even with life jackets you flip in this kind of weather and you can be in trouble quickly if you lose your kayak or can't be rescued fast.

Terrible. With how cold the water is, it would have been nearly impossible to tread water for more than a couple minutes. Was there not a safety boat/launch following them?

I trained a HS crew team here in Chicago and they were on the water as soon as the ice melted. None wore PFD’s. The safety boat followed right behind in case something went wrong.

That's insanity. I fish quite often out of my boat and I always stay close enough to shore I can swim if something catastrophic happened when the water temperature is this cold.

That's insanity to be out in the middle of a lake in these conditions without a safety boat following them closely.
