I swam the 500 in high school, still seems strange unless it was insanely choppy.
What was coming = even higher winds starting today through Wednesday.
they ARE adults. They were in charge and made a bad decision. Clubs at ISU are pretty loosely organized. You file the paperwork and have scheduled meetings and elections and boom...you’re a club. Was in several at ISU and don’t remember non-student adults involved at all.
The updated Daily article said one of the survivors swam to the north shore and one swam to the south shore. The third was rescued by a kayaker.
Was the pool you swam in 45 degrees?
When is crew season? From what I gather from the internet, crew season is primarily a spring sport. Seems to me summer/fall would make more sense especially for northern schools.

To come to the defense of BWR, he may be simply saying that it isn't unreasonable to think they might be able to swim to shore . . . like two of them did.
He acknowledged that there were other factors, such as choppy waves that might prevent it.
He might not have said it quite right, but I doubt he was being as callous as it seems to have sounded to some of you.
There are both spring and fall seasons. From what I have gathered, spring season games start around these parts in mid April. I have not found a schedule for the ISU crew club for 2021. FB posts from last weekend indicate they just got their shell and gear back from repair on Saturday.
Just an unreal situation. I can't imagine how it went down that everyone went in different directions.

There we’re definitely multiple factors at play, and I’m not saying it’s not possible for people to have made that swim, since two of them did. But it’s unreasonable to just say “why didn’t they just swim a quarter mile to shore?” That’s just completely ignoring the wind, the shock, potential hypothermia, and inexperience among the members.
I deleted what I previously commented because I’m going to give BWR the benefit of the doubt. But I really do hope they were not meaning it the way that I read it.
The Social Network (or any movie set at an Ivy League school where the characters walk by practice as an establishing shot) is the only time I've seen rowing so I kinda assumed it was all guys. Wrong.
I looked at their ISU page and it seems to be several years old but half the leadership is/was women. It's totally a moot point. I had no idea ISU had rowing. Lots of good into in this thread.

Seeing the five people mentioned it would’ve been a 4 person scull with a coxswain (coach/rhythm keeper) at the front for the fifth. The club has had coed groups compete in the past.
I highly doubt anyone swam to the north shore unless Michael Phelps was part of their group. The wind was straight out of the Northwest.
It's possible they ended up in that bay on the east side but I highly doubt they just swam straight into the wind and ended up on the north shore.
Was down their last year and saw them out on the lake early in the morning. The lake was like glass and I just wanted to stop and watch them go across the water.
