Why do journalists and the media think anyone cares about this NIL stuff?

It used to be back in the old days that Boosters would give Star Athletes Pay for Jobs they never even had to do. Like an automated sprinkler set to automatically water and athlete does not need to even show up, but gets paid. Now we have eliminated that scam. Big Boys will have donors lined up to essentially pay prize recruits for their “NIL” rights in all sorts of scam arrangements. Big Money Programs probably already getting their Boosters organized for the payoffs.

They all get extra spending money in the form of Pell Grants. Plus after all my tuition, R&B and books were taken care of I still had extra money (a couple hundred) each month before you even factored in the Pell Grants we all got.

This... I knew people on the track and field team and women's basketball team while I was a student and it sounds like they all knew ways to pocket a few hundred bucks a month from their living expense stipends. Pretty simple, just find a really affordable house or apartment with your fellow athletes and after splitting the rent and other expenses they all had plenty extra cash left. Sounded like it didn't matter where you lived they all got the same amount of stipends for living expenses. Plus they pretty much got plenty of name brand shoes and licensed ISU apparel too which all has value and something your average student likely would not be able to afford on their own. Access to help with classes and priority class scheduling, I am sure there is more than that but I've never really understood why people think D1 athletes are just barely getting by in college when they get plenty of financial support and perks.

For room you get the dorm rate. So say the dorm is $800 per month, but you and a few friends get an apartment that costs each of you $400 per month you then have $400 a month in spending money.

I think there are two reasons. 1) I think a couple years ago, there was an espn story or something where basketball player at a school said he didn't have enough money to feed himself. This then caused an increase in living stipends for athletes. 2) College athletics makes a lot of money, and people feel that for what college athletes put in, they are not getting their full worth. Basically everything you listed, is not enough for how much they bring in to the athletics department.

I'd like to know how that even happens. The scholarship pays for your meal plan, plus it gives you cash to buy meals on days when the dining halls aren't open.

I agree, but here is a link to the story I was thinking about.
