The kids planning on big things. He went from taking a lot of math and engineering related classes in HS to going to Iowa to major in business. Who goes to Iowa to major in business??

To be honest...almost every person I know that went to Iowa majored in business...which seemed like my entire HS graduating class! That said...if that kid can get paid to play baseball...DO IT!

Honestly I hope he goes to Iowa and plays both. Unique opportunity for him. My parents went and watched him play in Marshalltown last week and there were a crap ton of MLB scouts there. Just crazy.

I understand he might leave money on the table by doing that but you only get one chance to live.

Brecht is is a nice situation- he has 2 great options to choose from.

However, if he is drafted in top 5 rounds, it would be hard to pass up MLB baseball. It's not like he can't go to college in 5-6 years if baseball doesn't pan out. He may be able to play college football.

Baumler from Dowling was a 5th round pick of the Orioles last year. He received an above slot signing bonus of $1.5M plus an allowance of $250k to pay for college. He ended up pitching at the O's alternative site last year, but unfortunately hurt his elbow and needed Tommy John surgery.

The pro career is still there for Baumler, but nice to have $1.5M in the bank. If I'm a stud HS pitcher, I forego the college route. IMO a major league team is going to do a better job of load management.

Dude throws heat. He will definitely be drafted and he should take that route if baseball is his first love.

If he happened to be committed to Iowa State...I would still think he should take 1st round money if he gets the chance...and to be honest...even 2nd round money now! If he lasts into the 2nd round...someone will draft him contingent on a deal already in place! Somone will give him 1st round money and tank the rest of the draft! The White Sox took a high school pitcher in the 2nd round last year and gave the kid $3 million to sign. They agreed to the general parameters of the deal ahead of selecting him. So...if Brecht gets that opportunity...he would be crazy to pass it up! I do understand his desire to play football and possibly a chance to "star" for one of his state's schools...but if he can approach a $3 million payday without throwing a pitch...he needs to do it!

Edit: by saying "tank" the rest of the draft I mean due to the signing bonus allotments MLB teams are limited in what they can spend so a team can blow their allotment on their first two picks then draft guys that have no leverage to negotiate against the team (such as a college player who has used up his eligibility).

He’s going to be playing baseball.

Agree...it would be great to be in that position to make a choice like that...but it is also a life altering decision on many levels! Going through HS most of us had plans that kept us near or around our friends (I know, not all of us). If he did grow up "dreaming" of wearing an Iowa or Iowa State uniform...it would be a strange feeling to make the decision think about playing for "Cedar Rapids" or "Kannapolis" or any other single A team all next summer. Yes the amount of money would change the mindset but still...19 years old and potentially a long way from home with a lot of pressure to succeed is not an easy thing to confront!

Go drafted and make millions.

Go to Iowa to block defensive backs.

Hmmmmmm...... Not seeing the difficulty in this choice, but that's just me. If he goes to Iowa i just hope he doesn't get a serious injury and has a chance to play pro baseball.

I agree with the hope he doesn't get injured comment. But I don't know the kid at all...I am an adult...the choice seems ridiculously easy for me...but it might not be for him and that is fine. One thing about pro sports...if he picks baseball solely for the money...it won't be easy to get to the top...better be focused and driven or he will get eaten alive!
