I see what you're thinking - but wouldn't this be a reason for SEC not to grab OU (and to a much lesser extent, UT)?

Strengthening the conference is what should drive expansion. ISU is on the cusp of greatness - if CMC stays and (I think) he will if we are B1G.

Both work. It just depends on how many conference games you want, and how many years you want it to take to play everyone home and away.

Divisions make it easier to determine CCG participants, though (assuming CCGs are still a thing by then).

I would hope 16 team conferences go with 4 divisions/pods. For the theoretical scenario where ISU and KU are invited to the B1G, I want to see these:
East Pod: Rutgers, Maryland, Penn St, Ohio St
Central Pod: Michigan, Michigan St, Indiana, Purdue
North Pod: Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin
West Pod: Iowa, Iowa St, Kansas, Nebraska

That would allow for a nine game conference schedule where each team plays their pod every year, and plays 2 teams from the other 3 pods, alternating matchups each year (or on a rolling schedule)

adding two teams would allow the BIG to internally reset conference alingment. The west is far inferior to the east. Ballance it out, keep your protected rivalry game, and set up one hell of a finish at the end for the championship game.

Adding ISU to the West automatically balances it out.

Literally almost every Iowa alum and fan that I’ve talked to wants Iowa State in the Big 10. People need to learn that fans who post on social media apps aren’t representative of the whole- it’s a vocal minority and it consists of trolls.

I for one want us to land in the B1G when the realignment music stops simply because I feel like we're finally in a position to get consistent revenge on Nebraska for what they did to us in the 90's (granted, I was born in 1996, but still).

And the potential Otz vs. Hoiberg matchups in MBB are a *spicy* storyline that I feel like not a lot of people are picking up on.

IF, and that's a big IF, the B1G even wants to expand.... I think nearly every school in the B1G would welcome us.... except for Iowa. Iowa hates us with a passion, and right now are VERY worried about our success.

If Purdue would be forced to go to the East, then they would also vote no on ISU joining.... they have no hope at all in the East..... the West is very average.

I guess that is a positive take. I just tried to put it in reverse for the fun of it and reflect on how I would feel if Iowa was invited and came into the Big12. After the shock of that hypothetical thought, my take ...well, we play them anyway, and we definitely don't want super leagues or some dreadful downfall of the conference system, and college sports is so important to be relevant in our state, so why not?

Best records. Head-to-head as first tie breaker, pod record as second, record against common opponents as third.

Seeded semi-finals. Pod winner w/best record plays pod winner with worst record. (Ties factor in head to head if those games were played.) Other two play. Winners advance to CCG.

That said, I'd still prefer 2 eight team divisions

Iowa State makes a lot of sense to the Big10, but only if the Big10 grows to 20-24 teams

The Big10 has to match the bold move by the SEC on 2 fronts.

First, the Big10 needs to add schools that can grow the Big10's regular season media rights deal at a per school level. I have seen estimates that Texas and OU's value to the Big12 TV contract was 50%. By the end of the current contract that means Texas and OU's media right value to the Big12 was going to be around $225M or $112.5M each. The other 8 Big12 schools value would only be $28M each. The Big10 schools will each earn in excess of $60M at the end of their current contract.

The ONLY way the Big10 can keep up with the SEC is by adding the media rights equivalents of OU & Texas from the ACC and possibly Pac12. The ACC has a contract through 2036 with ESPN, but the value is already viewed as antiquated. Clemson could make $30-$50M less annually than it's Big10/SEC competitors when new agreements are finalized in a couple years. The Big10 MUST go after Clemson, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Florida State, etc.

Second, the Big10 has to keep up the SEC when it comes to putting teams in the upcoming 12 team playoff. Media consultants are projecting a 12 team/11 game playoff will generate $2 BILLION in media rights fees annually! Currently, the 4 team plus New Years Bowl games distributes around $600M. Currently, 80% of the rights fees go to the Power 5 conferences and 20% goes to Group 5 conferences. Currently, the 4 semi-final games schools each get around $6M plus $2.4M for expenses. Notre Dame gets around $4M automatically.

Think about it, the current media rights contracts for the P5 conferences pays around $3B for about 404 games a season. The proposed playoff will pay $2B for 11 games.

IMO the SEC adding UT&OU is all about SEC schools getting the biggest share of the playoff pie. First by reducing the number of P5 schools that share in the $2B AND maximizing the number of SEC schools selected to the 12 team playoff.

I believe if ISU gets invited to the B1G then it is an indication conferences are going to expand to P2; B1G and SEC.
