If we had to go with the remaining 8, I think you add BYU and that’s it. Why upgrade anyone? Why dilute the pie? nobody helps except BYU anyway

play 8 conf games, find 4 others which could be an SEC team, UNI, and two randoms. I’m assuming the Iowa game goes away eventually but maybe not.

Not exactly sure.

Because we had to be granted a waiver to play a CCG. That is worth a couple million a year to each team.

Need 10 to play a CCG. There is also some value (if the TV money isn’t diluted by much) in slicing off some of the American’s best programs so they don’t compete with us for a “conference champ” reserved bid in an expanded CFP as well.

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere, but this seems very relevant, and speaks to our desirability (and helps explain the rumors that this might happen). I doubt the talking heads in sports reporting have given this any thought.

So this means we should start full rate right?

Yeah that's not how research dollars really work. Maybe there's some program I haven't heard of but I'm not sure this makes any real sense.

I honestly don't know, you may be right. However, as has been said elsewhere, research funding dwarfs sports revenue, and with cooperation within a conference on these things, this could be a larger factor in the decision than what we add to the pot for sports.

I've come to terms with the big 12 adding 2 teams(preferably to the east), it's not that exciting but as long as we keep our p5 status that would be alright. I know the money wont be as much but such is life.

People seriously understate what a big deal the BTAA (formerly the CIC) really is.

Yeah that is definitely not how this works at all. But hopefully the academics and research dollars do matter at least somewhat.

It wouldn't take a ton, relatively speaking, of additional research dollars to seal the deal when added to the value we bring in athletics.
I agree. It seems like we fit really well in pretty much every way except what has been previously viewed as the most important aspect - cable TV market. But as we know that is rapidly becoming less and less important. Hopefully the B1G has the foresight to recognize this. I'm sure JP will be selling us hard.

What determines whether the Big 12 would keep P5 status? Wikipedia says that the P5 conferences are designated as "autonomy conferences" by the NCAA. Such conferences appear to have less restrictions on how they can use their financial resources.

I don't know that answer.

If there are automatically qualifiers in the reformatted playoff, the Big 12 being an automatic qualifier would give us that status, and IMO be all that ISU really needs to continue the path that we're on.

Pretty sure similar money and budget growth is going to be needed as well. I assume that could be made up by the general school budget (if they were so inclined), but if the budget drops by 10's of millions, the path is going to change.
