Anybody see this article?

“The Big 12 ended up with 12 finalists for expansion in 2016: Air Force, Brigham Young, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Connecticut, Houston, Rice, South Florida, Southern Methodist, Temple and Tulane.

Other applications were received. Schools that did not make the cut were Arkansas State, Boise State, East Carolina, Memphis, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, San Diego State and Nevada-Las Vegas.

This time around, the top contenders are expected to be BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, Boise State, SMU and Memphis.”

SMU and BYU should be the only potential expansion candidates. Would be fun to have a conference with the Holy Wars.

Also would be funny to see BYU at West Virginia and Tech road games.

IMO the other schools don't have a good enough academic reputation or aren't interesting culturally.

If we did this, does anyone know how the expected revenue would compare to what the former Big East was distributing?

Give me BYU and Cincinnati. No more Texas influence and Cincy has been at the power conference level before. I think those two also give the least drop off in terms of TV rights. I'm to the point that I don't want to go to 12 if expansion is the route we have to take.

Seems pretty obvious that the best candidates for $$$ and on-field performance are BYU, UCF, and Cincinnati. I think we will pick one more along with them and go to 12. My money would be on Houston or Memphis.
I like Boise St, as the 4th. How long have they been good at their current level 20yrs or more? The average ENGAGED college FB fan knows, they are legit team, you would not want to see them on your teams non-conf schedule (in short they are a know brand in CFB).

They have many downsides but lets be honest what matters here, are they good at football and would the average fan want to watch them. Houston, Memphis, SMU I dont think they bring that to the table, but I could be wrong.

Serious question, what do you mean by this?

BYU has a cool stadium with religious Mormons that I think would be an interesting contrast to the creatures in West Virginia. Or I guarantee there would be rivalries between the different Christian denominations in our conference (I think TCU already has a history and doesn't like them).

SMU has an actual football history and relevance, are rivals with other members of the conference, and aren't a joke academically (like Cougar High). Would strengthen our position in Texas as even casual Longhorn and A&M fans would be entertained at those matchups. (SMU vs. TCU games are great if you've ever watched them.)

Teams like Cincinnati are boring and bring zero content value to the conference. Also they don't have like a spectacular academic rating.

Basically I think the other teams are better for content which ultimately would result in a more interesting conference and more eyeballs.

I don't know what kind of Team Houston is supposed to have this year and I don't think TT is any good but I definitely want to see the ratings that TT vs UH on ESPN Saturday night get.

My thoughts on Memphis and Boise State are that if they didn’t make the cut last time, why would they this time around if expansion is something that actually happens? The only way it would make sense is if they’ve added something to the table since then, or if they were vetoed last time around by Texas or Oklahoma.

My guess would be that if the Big 12 does expand, it will be from the list of finalists from 2016.

We're not adding a team with a blue field. That should be written in the by-laws regardless if Boise is considered or not. If there is even a motion in any minutes in any meeting of the athletic department to change the color of your field, then that should be automatic dismissal from the conference. Period. End of story.

I'm not sure I want to ever see that field again.

If you didn't make the cut the first go around, I doubt you warrant consideration now. Cannot imagine much has changed for those schools in the last 5 years.

The overlap of both 2016 finalists and the schools Tramel says are expected to be finalists are BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, Houston, and SMU.

If that is the case, I think SMU is clearly the fifth-best option, and there is a clear top four.

If the league decides to expand only to 10, the decision might get a bit tricker. But I just think 12 is better for the reasons that matter.

A lot has changed, OuT is well...out, the Big12 seems to be on the outside looking in, $$ seem certain to be shrinking...etc.

Let's get the best of the rest and Boise is that. Add programs that will keep the Big12 as competitive as possible, while at the same time neutering the leagues below of any threats.

Like others have mentioned the gimmick of their blue field, although it did what they wanted it to do, maybe they would let that go if they "arrive".

Its not a popular take, I get it.
