Not only punting but the whole array of special teams play need an upgradeOur punting ....... needs an upgrade imo.
Stop with the false authority bull ****.So,..... it is so easy that it requires no skill, no practice and no teaching of proper mechanics?
Golf is easy too, right?
Stop with the false authority bull ****.
Our special teams needs work, and has been a weakness for 5 years. Punting often included
If our offense gets going, we won't need a punter.
Yeah. A 31 yarder counts against his average but if downed inside the 20 he did his job.True enough. One punt against UNLV, 31 yards, downed inside the 20
Not sure where you're going with that Muskie. I put in countless hours of practice. But it remains a simple process. You be you. Done.
How is Dunn still our punter? he was a disaster 2 years ago. didnt he have like a 9 yard punt vs iowa?
Dunn | Rivera | |
Attempts | 68 | 101 |
Average yards | 40.4 | 40.6 |
Touchbacks | 2 (3%) | 7 (7%) |
Inside the 20 yard line | 29 (43%) | 41 (41%) |
Over 50+ | 13 (19%) | 18 (18%) |
Blocked punts | 1 (1.5%) | 0 |
I'm going to keep defending Dunn from the hot takes on CF that are based on poor memory and not the facts that are in front of us. And I'm apparently going to have to keep doing it until the heat death of the universe. Out of 68 attempts Dunn averages 40 yards with 2 touchbacks, 29 inside the 20 yard line, 13 punts over 50 yards, and only one blocked punt in his career.
Well now look what you guys did, you made that poor guy's parent come on here and defend him.
I'm 4 years older than Dunn so I'd be surprised. I'm just frustrated because I can't count how many times I've seen on here and reddit Dunn get disparaged as being a bad punter when the facts don't bear that out.
To add onto this, the stats that were posted are wrong. 18/68 punts is actually 26%, meaning he is good for a good punt (50+yards) more than probably he gets credit for. However, that also means 1/4 of punts are going LESS THAN 30 yards. That's unacceptable and fairly leads to a lot of criticism. He's not a good punter. His average is meh, and if he always kicked at that average (other than when trying to pin guys inside the 10) he'd be a meh punter.
But he doesn't always do that. Against UNI he had punt of 28 yards. Against Iowa he had a punt of 27 yards (neither resulting with opponents possession inside the 20)
Back to 2018, not counting the Iowa game which you say is an outlier against OU he had a punt of 34 yards, Akron a punt of 29 yards, OSU 22 yards, Tech had 1 blocked for TD, 33 yards against Texas. In his career he's had 1 punt downed inside the 5 (at the 4)
So this isn't just some blip, this is who he is. He's good for one shank every 6 punts or so and one boomer every 10 punts or so.
Dunn attempted 2 rugby kicks against Iowa in 2018 which were his first punts of his career. It didn't go well and he never rugby kicked again. He finished 2018 averaging 40 yards and nearly half were downed within the 20 yard line. He had an achilles injury and was out for 2019, otherwise I expect he would have kept the starting job.

He's not perfect. But he's a damn good punter and this board should appreciate him more, IMO.
Edit:
Rivera, who I never heard this board ***** about had 101 attempts, averaged 40.6 yards, 7 touchbacks, 41 inside the 20, 18 over 50 yards, and 0 blocks.
Dunn Rivera Attempts 68 101 Average yards 40.4 40.6 Touchbacks 2 (3%) 7 (7%) Inside the 20 yard line 29 (43%) 41 (41%) Over 50+ 18 (19%) 18 (18%) Blocked punts 1 (1.5%) 0
Remind me again what's the difference between these punters?

You would probably have to mine the play by play for every game.Typo on my part. It's 13/68 so the percentage was correct. My point though is that Dunn and Rivera have very similar stats. But I never see anyone complaining about how Rivera was so unreliable like Dunn gets. I agree that Dunn kicks some ducks. But I think people are primed to expect it from him and thus it sticks more in their mind.
Does anyone have a source with stats for every kick? I've only been able to find stats at a game level.
The punt is one of the most irrelevant plays in football. It gets so much focus but our punter is averaging about 4 plays per game. The punt, has always been, and will always be, one of the most critical plays of a game. Where else, with a quality punter, can you nearly guarantee 40 to 50 yards of instant field position... or, be able to pin the opponent deep so they can't execute their gameplan.
