Hello Cyclone Family. My wife and I will be coming to Ames for our son’s graduation this December. Second generation Cyclone. Does anyone have any hotel recommendations for the Friday and Saturday night of the graduation weekend? Any hotels to avoid?

Not exactly sure.

The silver saddle is gone so you can’t relive the glory days there.

Are you wanting a suite, economical room, or a medium grade room. Need a bar or restaurant in it?

Thanks for the response. I should have included that we are just looking for a medium grade room, some place clean and friendly.

The only one I wouldn’t care for is days inn on duff. Packed in with everything else, in a busier area.

You should be fine wherever you stay though. Easy to get around. If you want to walk to eat supper, pick something around the duff/30 intersection. Several places out there.

Have only stayed there twice. Hilton Garden Inn was nice and convenient. Microtel was economical and pretty nice too. Farther away from campus though.

There are several newer hotels to the east of Jack Trice. The Gateway is good. The rooms are nothing special, but the area around conference rooms is decorated with Iowa State references.

Was at the Gateway this weekend.

Place is getting a bit dated but love having the Iowa Stater there and easy drive anywhere really.

For football and basketball we stay at the Best Western, easy access to "Elwood Drive" and Jack Trice/Hilton. Rooms aren't bad at all and pretty good breakfast.

I would recommend the MU. Amenities straight out of 1962. Separate hot/cold controls in the bathroom sink. Some peeling paint, kind of clean.

I think the Gateway has been wildly overrated for at least 3 decades, but that’s just me. Marriott keeps building new properties if you want to spend a little more, otherwise anything along the Dayton/S 16th corridor is perfectly fine AND close to El Azteca.

The positives to the Gateway are incredible comfortable beds and the full service restaurant/bar. The rooms are a bit outdated but nothing major.

SpringHill Suites on South 16th next to Deery is probably the best. New, clean, easy on/off Hwy 30, gas station right there.

Hilton garden inn is a really good spot I believe the Iowa state football team stays there the night before a home game.

I’m pretty sure the team is at the gateway. Probably due to the conference room set up.

Have mostly stayed at the Hampton Inn or Fairfield Inn (Marriott chain) over in the Hwy 30 hotel zone. Both decent places. North facing rooms at the Fairview are nice and quiet. Both have comfortable beds, Hampton maybe a plus up, and okay breakfast. I'm not a big breakfast guy but like to grab a little something to wash down with a couple cups of java.

In first with a recommendation for Seneca Wallace's Courtyard by Marriott!
