After taking a couple of days to let it sink in, it took damn near an A+ effort by West Virginia, some very beneficial calls going their way (impacting maybe 21 points), and a B- of a game from us for West Virginia to get a 7 point win. When you get pretty good, you tend to get the other team's best effort. West Virginia made it a point to beat us and they admittedly spent more time on us than usual. That's just something we need to get more used to. We have earned respect and by doing that, there is no looking past us, and in some instances, teams are circling the game against us.

I don’t see how this matches up with the result of the game.
you can lose a game close that you didn't really belong in. that's how I felt after Saturday. We had 3-4 huge plays ( pick six, Breece's two runs, long TD pass)

that kept us in the game. For the other 55 minutes of game time - I never felt like we were close to being the better team. We had the explosive plays -

it was like watching a Fury vs. Wilder boxing match. Wilder might hit Fury with a huge punch that dazed or knocked Fury down - but there was never a doubt that Fury was by all accounts the better boxer by a considerable margin. that's what watching Saturday felt like. We stunned West Virginia a couple of times - but it never felt like we were executing or playing anywhere close to the same level even though the score board said it was a close game because of those big plays.

From a consistency stand point over the course of 4 quarters, it wasn't as close as the score board said. I would take a win of course but at the same time, for me, it would have felt like one of the times a team escaped and really wasn't the better team on a given day. the score board can lie...

it can tell you things were worse than they were or that they were better than they were. Iowa this year where we just had a handful of plays go terribly wrong - wasnt a butt whipping. Saturday was a butt whipping where they did whatever they wanted to do outside of 6-7 plays most of the day.

I totally get your sentiment and agree we should be very appreciative of what this team and players have done for ISU football.

That said, not sure I agree on giving them credit for the WVU game. We were very soft and got manhandled at every level. They deserve some criticism for that.
I agree with what you said. They played great and we played bad. We had no business being in that game late based on that alone. And yet, we certainly were.

Bottom line is, there are no consolation prize in CFB. So I realize I'm arguing from a hopeless standpoint to begin with. It really sucks. That's all.

Start watching at around 7 minutes and go for 5 minutes. It's really good stuff.

All I heard was a year of prep and they required lots of "help" from the Big 12 refs to win this game. WV isn't good. They will lose 3 out of their 4 remaining games. This game remined me of the following. ISU has never, and will never, get good calls (hell just correct calls) from Big 12 refs. ISU got hosed.

A top 5 defense in the country and an o-line that returned everyone got blown up by a team they hadn't lost to, and had dominated, for the past 3 seasons. It's not about the score, it's about the expectations. If I race my 6 year old around the block and I try my hardest and he beats me by a step, it either means I am slow or he is fast. Regardless, I should have dominated a 6 year old in a race.

Weird comparison but that’s what you do I guess. Don’t forget we were missing our best defensive player and probably most important are overall.

How about us going 2 for 12 on 3rd down ( 9 for 15 for them) having 10 less minutes time of possession, giving up 370 through the air and having them run 15 more plays, doubled us in QB pressures etc... that's getting beat pretty good. 3 long plays equaled all most half of our offense and all of our points when you add in the pick 6. Outside of the FG we don't have any drives without a massive big play. Nothing sustainable. Nothing showing we were the more physical, well executing team.

They were quite simply the better team on Saturday. I dont think they are the better team overall but on Saturday, they were IMO

Yes, just a perfect storm of a good team playing poorly, a not so good team playing well, and typical poor officiating, but happened to affect one side more than the other. It sucks, but it happens.

ISU got really whipped in coverage vs. the pass, and the OL in pass protection. The latter is the most concerning for me because what we saw on Saturday there simply is no scheming around giving up pressure when WVU was dropping 8. If you give up pressure to 3, you are going to lose, and there's not a play you can call that's going to overcome that. WVU had some guts - they stunted a ton outside of obvious passing situations. It showed up in giving up some big lanes in the running game, but it caused enough problems in the passing game to pay off.

Always liked Neal Brown, class act always, they came off the road win and had this game circled. I think our guys were a bit beat up after OSU, which was a nasty hard fought game. We could have used a break after OSU, but its why CMC preaches consistency and we just arent there to be able to play such a physical game from OSU and come back and win a tough road game. WVU has played everyone close all year, they are a solid football team. Unfortunately we turn right around and now play Texas which will be very physical again. ISU just doesnt have the depth or enough of a talent advantage to make a championship run, and people are circling when they play us moreso this year because of the expectations.

And yet, if not for the officials taking a dump we should be 38-38 in the 4th quarter. Doesn’t exactly scream “total physical domination” to me.

If you fumble on the goal line you put it in the hands of the officials. Don't fumble.

having 10 less minutes time of possession

That's what happens you have big-play scoring drives that are 1:05, 0:11, 1:00, 0:00, and 2:24 instead of the grind-it-out 5:00-6:00 variety that we're more accustomed to.

The TOP in the first quarter was 12-3, but the game was tied 14-14.

College Football is tough, WVU figured us out, gamble a bit and either give up the big play or shut the drive down. Dont let ISU drive the field. It hurts because we dont have the talent like the elite teams to overcome some of this.
