I posted this last night, but there’s two scenarios that come to mind wrt MC leaving ISU:

1. He feels like he has nothing left to accomplish at ISU

and/or

2. He gets an offer he can’t refuse that checks all the boxes for him personally. Be it monetarily, family based, location, etc.

I think we’re still a good ways off from #1. I have no idea what’s in his head or his heart, so #2 isn’t worth worrying about.

If he gets option #2 he should take it! I hope that doesn't happen but an opportunity that checks all the boxes for someone doesn't happen very often so he would be foolish not to consider it. That said, I have zero inside info...only read the same things most others read on this site...all conjecture on my part. Have never met the guy so I don't know what he wants...but if someone offers him every thing he would ask for...he should accept it. Maybe ISU is offering that...

Unless I missed something all Football Scoop said is LSU is interested in Matt Campbell. That is very different from what you are implying.
I'm hearing similar things as what Pratt42 just stated. People close to the program are worried and think this year is much different than ones of the past. They were never concerned in previous years..even with big rumors like the Lions offer.

The Football Scoop podcast said something also very similar. Basically said in the past Matt never really even considered leaving ISU..said the ISU admin should get a lot of praise for the culture they've built for Matt to be happy...but they are hearing that he is listening this off-season and think it's a very real possibility he might make a move. So they did say a little bit more than just LSU is interested. Which they most certainly are.

I know it was a little tiny clip by Fox, but that moment where CMC was talking to Brock....that is the most father/son relationship I've ever seen between a HC and a player...Campbell just has a different mindset than other coaches. No, this season hasn't panned out the way we had hoped but Campbell is a culture guy through and through and these large programs have major culture issues that he'd have to completely overhaul.

Yeah, i loved that.....and I dont' think people realize that is how he connects with players...he is tough...but genuinely cares

Hard disagree on Penn State. I'd worry about that job if it came open. That's a fan base with expectations but they aren't SEC crazy. Obviously the athletic department has had turmoil but that's well in the rearview mirror.

But yeah, I'd be surprised if he went to USC. That seems like a real fairweather fan base more than a crazy one. I just don't see a Midwest guy with young kids uprooting it all to move to LA.

I would be surprised if the USC fan base would accept his hiring in a way that wouldn't embarrass the school! I mean...we all know how good he is! But in LA...how many people would jump for joy upon hearing that USC hired Matt Campbell from 7 win (hopefully) Iowa State!?! I believe in him and believe he will succeed anywhere he chooses to go but a school like USC and its fans aren't the same typical fan that exists in the midwest. Nothing better or worse...just very different.

If his results are similar at Penn State (7/8 wins) they won't accept it.

I think it's a tight community so that would appealing I'd guess.

Thats honestly a battle he will face with fans at any program the next level from Iowa State. Many will question him for having 7 and 8 win seasons at Iowa State.

Completely agree! I just think a midwest program like PSU or ND might be more accepting as they could frame the hire as somewhat of a "local guy" perspective. Plus, Iowa State's recent run might be on the radar of those fans and more understandable. USC fans might as well be on the other side of the world when it comes to Iowa State football! Again, just my perspective.

I brushed this off, but after reading your post, maybe I should be a little more nervous after reading this article.

My only hope is that coaches who Matt Campbell said he admires are coaches like Kirk Firentz, Mike Gundy, and Gary Patterson. Those are all program building and long-term coaches. Please be that for us Matt, please

I don't think he'd care what people think (he's very committed to his way/culture/process)

I would worry if a school had an athletic director that could "speak his language" and was not a slime ball (i.e i think Matt would see through a slime ball).

I also MIGHT worry if they were able to offer a package that could pay his assistant tons....as i could see him looking out for them and make that part of his deal.

On the radio show last night he mentioned Gary (as it came up coaching against a temp coach) and he went out of his way to talk about Gary's culture he built, etc.

I know that is what I always hope...is that he truly wants to be a legend for building/maintaining (especially at a place like ISU) vs just taking over a program with lots of advantages and winning.

For the record, I think it would be a very bad move for Matt to leave for one of these jobs. His philosophy and culture is exactly that of ISU's athletic Department under Jamie. He could coach here for the next 20 years and make $100 million and be iconic to a school and fanbase. He could go to an LSU or Florida and flop and be out of that job in 2-3 years and who knows where your career goes from there.

Fred isn't doing so well since he left Ames.. (maybe monetarily)..

The guys that get to this level don't make job decisions assuming they will fail.

For my mental wellness, I really shouldn’t be checking this thread.

But who am I kidding? I know I’ll be here every 15 minutes for the next two weeks.

Not sure. If Campbell has ever really considered leaving I think this would be the year to do it with what he has coming back roster wise. Eventually the shine could wear off and not be the "hot" name anymore. Campbell though could be perfectly fine with that and be more than happy to stay at ISU. Don't know...

Like the highest ranked recruiting class in recent school history? Could he leave, sure. But I just don't see him walking away right now. Could easily be my cardinal colored glasses...who knows.

His first task was prove that you could win games in Ames. Then he had to prove you could recruit kids to Ames. He's done both of those things. He's made a name for himself and is I feel like is just now turning that corner into really making this program a successful program. He's also proven that he could do it by developing 3 star kids. Imagine the potential when applying that type of development and leadership to kids who have more raw talent? It would be a shock to me if he quit the marathon on mile 25.

This is important to note too. That’s how highly successful people think.

If MC goes to one of these schools, he’ll be thinking “I turned around Iowa State, heck yes I can win here!”

I’m sure Fred thought the same thing when he went to Chicago, and probably still thinks he can turn Nubs around (still possible).

I don't think it would be anything to do with recruiting class rankings. I mean if he takes a job in the SEC that is open, our recruiting class would be one of the worst in that schools history. Even though it's great for us, If an LSU coach recruited our class the fans would be pissed.
