I dunno - I'd say you reap what you sew. If the report is true, he broke the rules and got caught in an era when it's really tough to actually break the rules. If anything, I'm glad this report is coming out. Maybe it will finally force those last few holdouts to recognize that Hoiberg was never a choir boy and "The Mayor" was only a TV marketing campaign character. You can only hope this lets the rest of the ISU fanbase move on.

Sure, I get it. It's just hard as Fred was one of my childhood idols when he was at Ames and ISU. The 1991 State Championship is one of my first sports memories. I was so excited when he "played" against us when I was at a youth basketball camp.

I've fully moved on from him as a coach or ever coming back to ISU, but it still hurts.

As the old saying goes, "Don't meet your heroes"

You sow seeds and sew fabric.

Heard from a relative in Nebraska that was expecting it. Said Abdelmassih was put on leave for health reasons, but there were rumblings about recruiting violations.

It is absolutely health related. Nebraska's health. Nebraska is getting tired of his cheating.

If it's possible to say, what are some of the rumors that Matt and Fred got away with when recruitng these kids to ISU? I want to hear the Paul Harvery version "the rest of the story"

What would he have done to lose his job though? I mean...Bruce Pearl is still coaching...Self will continue to coach...if Fred gets canned for something it would have to be significant!
Last year Pearl won 16 games. It was by far his worst season in over a decade.

Fred has 19 wins and is through all but one of the buy games in year 3.

That is the difference. With the huge number of D1 teams, how bad the teams at the bottom are, and the number of buy games a power conference team has, I don't care what program you are at. If you go three seasons without breaking double figures in wins you absolutely should be fired because you have failed miserably.

This is just strange. People have identified a lot of good reasons why Fred is not successful at NU. But for him to fail this badly is shocking to me.

Let's just say Donnie fron the New Kids on the Block had to have his stomach pumped after a little recruiting trip he took to Ames....

It was pretty common knowledge that he wasn’t necessarily running a clean program at ISU. Was this really news to you?

I didn't expect him to light the world on fire given Nebrasketball history the college game catching up to what he did several years back, but still didn't think it would go this bad.

Yeah - sometimes I forget that. I was an elementary school kid in southeast Iowa during Hoiberg's playing days. I didn't really follow sports that much at the time and even when I did watch sports the only thing on TV was the Hawkeyes (didn't have cable). I have no connection to him as a player. There are a lot of people who have fond memories of his playing days and I totally get that. I think his legacy as a player is still intact. His legacy as a coach and his marketing persona as an ISU superfan is gone.

I don't doubt the findings but I completely agree. This seems oddly convenient. Similar to their football violations from last year that came to light (improper use of analysts and consultants during practices and games).

It's almost like someone higher up is trying to pave a way for their athletic department to get out of these contracts.
Yep. I find it hard to believe Nebraska commits any more violations than a Kansas or Kentucky. The athletic departments at those schools want to help their programs not get caught, though, and even when they are caught, the punishment from the NCAA is usually miniscule. Nebraska likely wants Hoiberg out and will go out of their way to give the NCAA as much information as possible so they don't have to pay his buyout.
