Not exactly sure.
I got a 26., had a 2.9ish for high school. As things go, I did kinda OK.

Google tells me it goes to 36.

My general plan is to open the doors and give people a chance. Obviously, not everyone is pushing on to maniacal extremes like I did, but that's fine. People find out a lot about subjects and themselves.
I wasn’t serious in HS. I showed up to test hung over and sick, hit a 26. I studied for one test in HS (never opened a book, some classes literally) That was reading my notes twice (only did because the teacher said he had never had a 100% on it in all his years so he kept the test and you could only look at it after, so I wanted to show up his arrogance) and carried a 3.67 in HS taking college preps.

It came easy for me. Why I struggled at the beginning of college.

So a 22 composite on an ACT and you can have a 2.00gpa?

Yes, that is correct.

And some college is better than no college. I am 100% in favor of giving a kid a chance to prove him/herself. At the very least, that individual will get a college experience and hopefully better themselves.

Standardized tests aren't perfect, but they are a pretty damn good indicator for the majority of takers.

Agree, but they also cannot measure a person's determination and effort. Some can overcome and succeed if given the chance. Also, it's hard to expect a kid from a bad high school to do well on a standardized test.

I'm in favor of pitching the ACT/SAT stuff for college. If people want to base scholarships on it, that is their choice. I have seen too many times a high ACT person do poorly due to work skills and general ability and also seen poor test takers really excel in school and work. They just aren't a great standardized test taker.
Totally agree that effort and conscientiousness can trump smarts. But that is the exception that proves the rule: simple, flawed, standardized tests are still the best predictor of success. Not neccessarily "good", but "best".

It shouldnt be the only criteria, but it should be part of the decision criteria.

That last part is the trick, and that's why they truly are not an indication of ability. They just indicate the background the test taker is coming from.
Too often, that indicates the level of future success, but that doesn't make the tests an accurate measure. It just shows some major problems in people's backgrounds.

My guess the ACT scores you show are additive of the individual subject matter tests

It used to be with ACT most people focus on composite scores which can range from something like 16(low) to 35 (perfect).

Whereas, with SAT the individual subject matter tests were added to arrive at a total score vs. an average with ACT.

I might be wrong as I took my standardized tests 30(GRE) to 40 (ACT) years ago.

There was a bit of a challenge deciding how high or low in the F range he should go. Write down enough points to give him a chance to redeem himself later, or just bury him with the score he deserved?

I aimed somewhere in the middle, but it didn't matter. He blew off enough other stuff and plagiarized a big assignment, so nothing really mattered.

I actually saved an exam from my lit class. The grade was "F- and if there was a grade lower than that, I would give it to you." At least the professor was cool and after a private meeting I was able to explain my ADD and issues with reading comprehension. She offered to give me a C if I took tutoring and she could basically prove my effort and I'm not just a dumb idiot phoning it in.

That's just nasty. There's no excuse for writing that to someone at all.
That's the approach I took with a nasty prof. He acknowledged he was wrong and promised to fix his behavior (which he did), but also volunteered that there were other approaches I could and should take if he didn't.

He wouldn't explicitly have known, but I had the links for disciplinary action with tenured profs sitting on my computer and was ready to fire off the forms and raise some hell.

With a prof like that, I'd head straight to their department chair. If they responded poorly, it's dean time. There's no call to write that on a student's work, even when it's not good at all.

My kids could have better grades had they completely shut up but I told them that I would rather pay more for college and have them learn to fight than a 4.0 who got trampled.

I did tell them to pick their battles though. There is a time and a place just to shut up and except it I mentioned. Your daughter appears to be in that situation

This was me in HS. Wish I had the 4.0 instead. 2.3 cum GPA/29 ACT.

Disagree that it’s the exception. Seen it too much to say that. Some of these schools are crap.

I have decided that University's need to decide if they are a minor league for pro football or a university who happens to offer football.

Let the 20-40 university's [who knows how many would do it] sign up for this super minor leagues. No rules [not really any now]. Let the rest come up with a set of rules that they can agree to that will stand legal challenges and continue to play college football. I am becoming more interested in non power 5 football with each new published account of $$$$$$$$$hit!
This is an excellent post, and I have to believe this is where things are headed. If this happens, and we are not part of the “pro” league, I will be happy and never watch a single game the “haves” play.

Pretty sure there are workarounds. I've turned in Ds and Fs for players before and then watched them appear on the field.
As a note, people getting Ds and Fs simply because they just don't do the work usually do it across the board in all their courses. Somehow, they were all eligible.
Right. Well they’re only truly hurting themselves. Most people need skills in life. Modern day football will ultimately make academics optional.

Had a prof once who let me write a paper explaining the content after a meeting as it was obvious tests were going to be a problem.

Testing was always a slog for me but papers/essay were a strength.

They were known to not be very flexible so I was lucky they allowed it.
