ISU dropped to OU in 2002 after being ranked #9 in football, Senaca having a feature on Gameday, and proceeded to self destruct and ended up in Boise in sleet and freezing rain.

2021, ISU is on the cusp of its greatest season ever, facing down its hated rival, ranked #9, and Brock Purdy throws 3 INTs and Breece Hall fumbles and ISU goes on to finish 4th.

2014-2015 Mens Basketball after an unbelievable season drops against UAB in the NCAA tournament ending a season in devastating fashion.

2013-2014 Mens Basketball, on the cusp of a final four run with Sophomore Georges Niang, Seniors Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane, Georges Niang breaks his foot in their first game in the NCAA tournament, and although a valiant run was made, the Cyclones ran out of gas in the sweet 16.

Don't worry about the #9 ranking jinx. I think there's a good chance our ranking could could move up or down a spot before the Baylor game, depending on how other ranked teams do this week.

More hilarious, Hawkeyes are still getting votes at this point with their resume

It's all about perception, not reality. We always start out unranked and have to really earn our way up the rankings ladder. Iowa, on the other hand, seems to always start out ranked and they have to really earn their way down the rankings ladder. It's like the burden is on ISU to prove why they should be ranked, and the burden is on Iowa to prove why they should not be ranked.

At this point, though, I don't give a rip about Iowa. We kicked their butts by 20, so there's no debate.

Crepes has us #14 after not ranked a week ago. Two pollsters have us at 25. Joining decock is Jesse newell from Kansas City star who ranks the Hawkeyes 23rd

Probably a KSU terd like that one guy that posts here. They hate us because they think they are us, but they’re not.

Do people really believe #9 is a curse perpetrated on the clones by an evil sports wizard?

If you are one of these people do you also hold your breath when crossing bridges? Runaway from broken mirrors? Believe stepping on a crack will break your mothers back? Perhaps Jim Carrey’s the number 23 is your favorite movie?

Lol STOP IT

I think they should. NET #23, 2-3 in Quad 1 and 2 games, absolutely destroyed the bad teams they've played.

We started off the 2013/14 season 14-0, ironically beat Baylor in our first conference game at home, then lost at OU 87-82 as the #9 team. We proceeded to lose 4 of the next 5 games.

That ended up being a great season for us as we beat UNC to get to the Sweet 16, but also the tournament that Niang broke his foot. What could have been with that roster....

I feel there are other examples (in FB and MBB) but that's the first one that comes to mind.

Our fanbase quickly forgot how much some of those Hoiberg teams underachieved.

I've expected that loss to come in more than one game this year, and they've kept surprising. Hard to bet against them now.
Hell our 2-22 team almost beat them on the road last year, I’m not going to act like we can’t win that game.

Here we go again. Rinse repeat.
I want to believe ISU is a top 10 team... I truly do. After they get into the Big 12 season, we will see. The Big 12 is a total meat grinder. So far ISU has risen to the challenge. I just wish the Baylor game would have been later, when the students could be there.

I wear red socks for all the games. Been doing it for years. Does it help the teams win? Doubtful. Does it make me less anxious? Yup. So deal with it.

To me, high rankings are a mixed blessing. Yeah, it's cool to see our teams up there in the rankings. But we have a sad history of our teams dying ugly deaths when ranked.
Either they buy into the hype and think all they have to do is show up (UAB, anyone?) or they become a bigger target and get the best efforts of every team in the Big 12, and that's a helluva a grind.

So yeah, I'm wary of high rankings. Do I think it's a conspiracy curse? No, not really. But I've seen bad things happen when we're ranked, and I'm a Cyclone. I may not need a nut cup, but I definitely understand the desire for one. :D
