I'd guess Murray is really tired of being a stepping stone job for coaches. Any time they have a little success, the coach leaves. Prohm would end that cycle. He's seen P5 ball and he's not going to leave them for pretty much any job.

That said, he's going to have to be a lot better at roster management than he was at ISU. He was completely derailed by a one and done. With the transfer portal, you have to expect that your best players at that level are there for one good year. He's going to have to rebuild every season and that wasn't exactly his strong suit at ISU.

Does this reduce the buyout that ISU owes him over the next several years?
It may but it's not huge dollars. Murray was only paying McMahon $340k and Murray is going to be losing a bunch of NCAA revenue in the conference change. They won't get anything from the OVC and they won't be eligible for MVC money until 2024 and then it's just from when they were in the league.

That's the right move for both sides.

Murray can't gamble on a new guy with the step up in league and Prohm gets to go home and coach at a level where he's best suited.

The rare hire that makes sense from every angle.
They're probably tired of coaches leaving for bigger jobs too. Prohm would likely be there for the long haul if he succeeds.

"Ok-, let's just go 15 miles up the road, take steve out to a catfish restaurant and call it a national search, yeah that's what Murray State deserves right? I'm sure that's why so many other schools are burning up his phone seeking his coaching abilities. If people keep thinking of our program as mid-major, that's what we will always be. If they hire him and he does well, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong."

I get the point about NIL and transfer rules changing the landscape for a lot of teams, but off the top of my head I can’t think of a lot of MVC guys who have transferred up. The Drake PG obviously and I bet he’d like a redo on that. Also, there are some good MVC coaches like Jake and Devries, but OTOH you have Lick at Evansville sitting on a 9-39 conference record just recently being told his job is safe. Lol. Good one Evansville.

Depends on what they actually negotiated. He was due to be paid by ISU thru summer 2025. He could have agreed to take less if all was paid at once for example

So it's THT's fault? That's awfully creative. I don't think this is the place to rehash everything, that's been done over and over. But that one is certainly a new angle

I know its part of the contract and he deserves to take it, but wouldn't you feel like a pile of crap negotiating a severance after a complete failure?

He made 1 NCAA tournament there with another coaches team. He had two NBA guards in that league and couldnt make the tournament.
It's borderline impossible to get an at large from the OVC.

Moving to the Valley is going to give them a little bit more margin for error and legitimate chances at getting in without winning the league tournament.
