I was almost more impressed with Gaitan’s takedown defense. There were a couple situations Riggins had him in that very few counter. That is from memory, haven’t rewatched it after attending that night.
Pretty exciting if we could get Gaitan. To compete and beat Riggins like he did is a big deal.

@buf87 where does a recruiting class of Perryman, Swiderski, Rojas, Fousek, Nando JR and if the stars align and Gaitan comes aboard rank?

Add that to Schon, Paniro, Greenlee and whoever else I'm forgetting last class and that's not too bad.

Of course it all goes to hell if Gaitan goes to ASU.

I would say #3.
Ohio State is #1 with Mendez, Feldman, Bouzaski (former #1, #2, and #3), Schumate at #19
NC State at #2 with Fishback at #5, Singleton at #14, Arrington at #20, Horne at 22
Then us with Swiderski at #8 and climbing, and Rojas at #13

Gaitan very underrated as well recent wins over #7 Haines and #30 Riggins. He’s more like a top 25 guy, but a bit of a late riser.

I agree. And Mendez and Arrington probably should drop and little and Swiderski rise.
Arrington got pinned by Garvin and Mendez getting beat by Swiderski again.

Throw in Naak and hopefully Hagerty in 2023 and that is a very talented core for the post-David Carr era of Iowa State wrestling

Mendez got smacked by Swiderski this last go around. Can be argued that Mendez may have shown mat control (perceived or not, he was moving forward), but he couldn’t match Swiderski’s explosiveness. When Swiderski shot, he finished. When Mendez shot, Swiderski was either too quick or too strong (both on a couple of occasions) for Mendez to finish.

That Rudis match was really something. Mendez only scored on escapes and his best chance for non-escape points came early after Swiderski’s first takedown. Mendez tried to create a scramble, which I was worried might turn into a reversal, but it ended in a stalemate.

In the end:

- Swiderski: 10 (4 takedowns, 1 escape and 1 RT point)
- Mendez: 4 (4 escapes; 3 after Swiderski takedowns and 1 to start the 2nd)

Swiderski jumped to #5 P4P on Flo. Rojas at #16.

Connor Euton stayed at #12 at 152, Ethan Perryman dropped from #15 to #19 at 120, only due to two guys moving down, one guy moving up, and another kid having a great tournament over the weekend.

Fun edit: MJ Gaitan is #4 at 160. Has beaten the #1 and #5 ranked kids at the weight. Other sites have him at #1. Certainly has a good case for #1, the only loss keeping him down is the #3 kid at 170 back in September.
