Don't know anything about this kid. Where's he live? What kind of competition does he play? What's his postition? Why do you like him so much?

Haven't seen him yet, but plan to. All of the Sioux City schools are pretty good this year. Heelan was No. 1 (3A) but was beaten by No. 10 SC East (4A), who in turn was beaten by South Sioux City and fr guard Mike Gesell. Gesell has reportedly been offered by ISU, Creighton and UNI already. SC North is also good this year.

A friend of mine WoodburyCy (don't believe he posts here) saw him last weekend and sat by an AAU coach who told him Wes was better than Hinrich at that age. Hinrich did mature physically between his fr and soph years however.

Wes is pretty humble and plays hard also. He had 28 points and hit 8 baskets in a row along with 7 rebounds against SC East. Woodbury says he is very quick and can penetrate with ease.

Outstanding get by McD. Recruiting has been very positive lately in MBB and the team seems to have turned a corner.

I may actually see that light at the end of the tunnel.

This may be hyperbole, but when we first started hearing about him on this board, someone said that he could hold his own against varsity competition when he was in 6th grade.

that was me. i am good friends with an old sc west assistant who is now coaching in the kc area. he said the only reason he wanted to stick around here was to get the chance to coach wesley and that when staten was in j high he would definately hold his own with the varsity.

We just need a constant stream of top 150-100 kids into the program. If he is in there I will be pleased and excited. If the kid makes the top 50 or higher so much the better.

Can't remember if this has been asked but is SC West a 4A school?

i was wondering the same thing. I think they are 4A but i am not really sure

Yes all three city public schools (East, West and North) are 4A. SC Heelan (Catholic) is now 3A.

One thing about Sioux City public schools that sucks and is being addressed is they do not offer junior high sports. Kids play youth ball organized by groups like the Siouxland Y. Really hurts imo.

Wesley Staten - How solid is his commitment?

He's such a young guy; anyone here know how he came to make the decision to accept Mac's offer? Are his parents rock-solid behind him, giving their blessing to Wes's decision? How many times has Wes been to ISU's campus, attended games?

Looking for some idea about the firmness of Wes's decision from someone who knows. JD - who committed as a freshman - has remained rock solid for ISU, I expect Wes will, too . . . just having the usual worries that we fan types have.

ISU is close to home for Wes, by the time Wes arrives on campus the Cyclones will be a nationally ranked team. It's all good.

Chris Colvin and Wes Staten and Chasson Randle . . . and HB all on the same team? Wow.

It can't hurt that bad if they have two freshmen who are high level D1 prospects already.

Its better now since kids do have other outside possiblities. Before Hinrich and West won about 8-9 years ago and then Jacobsen and East shortly after that Sioux City had never won a state championship in bb.

I don't have the connections at West I used to when Hinrich was playing but I do only live a few of blocks away from the school. My son is only 7. I'll try to catch a few games and try to snoop around a little more these days.

Don't really know Staten's situation but I'm sure if he explodes like Harrison that they'll all come calling. Having the verbal now has to help. It sure would have been nice to get Harrison's verbal a couple of years ago.

Ok, I'd rather talk about this season and recruits for next season, not a freshman in high school who could eventually not even pan out. HES A FRESHMAN GOR GOD'S SAKE!

Actually no you would not. If you would rather talk about them you would not be in this thread talking about Wesley. So in fact if you would rather talk about them then get out of this thread and talk about them in a new thread.

What his final ranking is will probably largely depend on how much he grows.

I had not seen this interview. Thanks!

The interview reads like Wes is a sharp, mature kid, even though he's a high school freshman. That, and the fact that his parents have been with him every step of the way, convinces me that Wes's decision is rock-solid final. I'm a happy fan!

How do we know he will be about 6'5''? Are his parents tall? I certainly hope this turns out to be the case.
i dont know the family personally but right now he is 6'0" and from people ive talked to who know him and his family, we can expect him to grow at least to 6'3". he may not get to 6'5" but he will be a tall/long PG either way.

Yep! I got the same impression, he looks like a bright young man that will honor his descision.
