There was nothing we could have done.
Going to be fascinating to watch the dislikes pile up on one of these, and the likes pile up on the other.

Letting Gable go to Iowa. Think how many national championships we would have at ISU if we had kept Gable, and if Cael could have built on that tradition...ISU could have had the strongest wrestling program for decades!
Not owning the Cyclone/Cy as the mascot in everything branding. We're the only one. Multiple Tigers, Bulldogs, Eagles, etc. The I-State logo is a miss yet we've had it for 15ish years.
I’d say not using running cy or the tornado enough.
Or not jointing the western conference back in the late 1890’s (I’m just assuming it was easier to join conferences then). Even ignoring the money issue (which you can’t completely ignore), I think I would have rather grown up watching Iowa state play big 10 schools than the big 8/big 12 schools

How about, until recently, not sticking with a consistent brand identity.
It definitely has been all over the place at times, throughout much of previous six-ish decades.
I'll throw one out there that I'm not even sure how much I believe in myself, but there may be a case for it....
...sticking with grass as a playing surface in Jack Trice. (gasp)
I think the concerns about late-season field performance are well-documented, and valid - particularly in this era where late November and early December games are common. But I'm thinking about it mostly in terms of the potential for revenue by opening up the stadium to large concerts and other events. Particularly now that you've got a huge RV tailgating space and potentially an entertainment district coming in. Wells Fargo stole all of Hilton's concerts but Jack Trice offers the one truly huge venue in central Iowa that nothing else can match.
But perhaps they evaluated the feasibility of that and decided it couldn't be done.

But to be fair, I believe that was technically an Ames/Story County Cyclone Club thing.

However nothing ISU could have done that would be categorized as realistic and/or reasonable could have been done.
