Um. No need to hold anything back in week 1. Let it rip.

Holding back hasn't helped us w/ Iowa yet. Let em see what we've got. And then mix it up on week 2. Keep em guessing. Show em what we can do, then do it, or do it in a different way. Holding back on week 1 won't help.

Let em have both barrels. In week 2, wait till you see the whites of their eyes. Then let em have both barrels again!
Well, yeah. But if you know that’s not going to happen.

Exactly right! The strategy of going vanilla makes no sense, and doesn't work from everything I've seen.

If it did work, then we'd be playing our best at the start of the season and get worse as the season went on and teams saw more of our plays and were able to prepare for them..... but exactly the opposite happens. We usually play better as the season goes on. So just play your game from the start and curb stomp everyone!

You guys are thinking SEMO is a Valley level team. They aren't. They'd go 0-fer in the Valley and I'm not sure there's a game they'd be competitive in. They were 4-7 in the worst full scholarship league in the country last year.

This isn't UNI or SDSU or even USD rolling in.
I don't like it we are playing such a weak opponent. Steel sharpens steel and Iowa will get more of that in their opener.

If we start with a stronger opponent, which we have, it still wouldn’t matter. We need to just focus on playing the game, not trying to get too cute or hold things back. Just stop ******* around and play football.

So far it really hasn't mattered who ISU has played first.

UNI at least seemed formidable last year and ISU came out and was very poor fundamentally.

IMHO this is the type of year we beat Iowa. We do our best against them when less is expected from us.

Not even sure what podcast or quote you're referring to.

Got a tl/dr version?
Most recent Williams and Blum podcast. CW said Blythe (who used to be on Farleys staff) has said that UNI prepares all offseason specifically for ISU/Iowa if they are on the schedule because a win or even just having a good showing in that game does more positive for the program than having a "better year" all-around year without it.

Yeah that makes sense and UNI certainly looks well prepared when they play either, but that doesn't mean ISU has come out playing well or that it really looked like they got much out of it in prepping for Iowa.

They were sloppy in 2019 vs. UNI and the next week the game came down to fundamentals, of which ISU was lacking.

I've been around long enough to know that the scenario and result of the first game hardly ever reveal the outcome of the second.

Blythe used to be a Farley assistant. Blum and Williams said that at LeClaire. Blythe explained that every year Farley sells out preparing for ISU/UI/WI (whichever is in their schedule), because beating a P5 team would be the gem of their year.

that is exactly right. The fundamental mistakes in the 2019 game really hurt. Turning the ball over at the 19 yard line, running a ball out of the end zone on a kick, getting tackled at the 12, and a freaking penalty on top of that set up our O inside the 5. The poor coverage on the kick return set up Iowa for a very short touchdown drive. Oh, and lets not forget the special teams gaff where two guys collided into each other resulting in a turnover. So yeah, fundamentally they were not ready for Iowa.
