Punter acted like he had ALL DAY. Special teams act like they have no awareness of what CAN go wrong.I thought that first punt was going to be blocked. STs worries me next week, iowa wins in the margins.

Dude;s a freshie. He was better the next timePunter acted like he had ALL DAY. Special teams act like they have no awareness of what CAN go wrong.
Comment on the radio that some safeties were dinged up—which is why Cooper started. I assume that meant Verdon. Not sure what other S didn’t play, seemed like lots of them did.Where was Verdon? I don’t remember seeing him or hearing his name at all yesterday
I like how Northwestern has attacked them thru the Fitz years. 4 wide with single back. Spread them out and run a lot of crossing routes in front of their drops. Then zone read with the single back. Northwestern has beaten Iowa most of the time they’ve had a competent QB, even with fairly pedestrian receivers and RBs. I think this ISU team is as good or better than most of those Wildcat teams. Just have to not **** it up (easier said than done for recent ISU teams).I don't disagree but that is also literally what Iowa wants teams to do.
If you play a two high shell as much as Iowa does - or traditionally does - you're daring teams to try to pass.
I think we can pass on them but we have to commit to trying to establish the run otherwise Iowa's defensive line might eat the offensive line alive if we allow them to just T-off and rush the QB.
- Dekkers is as good as advertised. He looks like a Senior out there and outside of the INT which was a great defensive play as well, he was nearly perfect. Also Rocco looks like he could’ve started and won that game. He looked very comfortable in his first snaps as a true freshman.
- Our RB room is stacked. Brock and Norton will compliment one another greatly. Hope Norton is back soon.
- WRs were near flawless. Maybe the best all around group since Lazard, Butler and Murdock.
- OL did well in the first game and that’s encouraging for the year. Next week will be a huge test and let’s see if they can give Hunter time to carve up the defense.
- DL was okay but their OL was surprisingly solid. Awesome play from Tyler on the INT. I’m not too worried as we only sent more than 3 guys a handful times.
- LB will be interesting but will come along. Our pursuit and tackling was night and day better in the second half.
- DBs looked good. Excited for that group as I think there are quite a few playmakers out there.
- ST did their job and that’s all I can ask for. No big returns, no shanked punts or kicks. I think both freshman guys will be really good by the time their careers are done here.
Agree with 99%... I thought DB's were not great in the first half.- Dekkers is as good as advertised. Yep the first half the DBs were just okay but honestly I think if you throw out that deep throw then they’d upgrade to good. Overall they were solid.Agree with 99%... I thought DB's were not great in the first half.

I still think we have to have somewhere between 10-15 carries in the first half. If we're 20 pass - 10 run 20 something to 15 run I think we're in a good spot
That’s certainly possible. I’m really excited to see what they can do against Iowa because that group was running around wide open yesterday. Hopefully that’s more of a testament to the guys and less on how SEMOs DBs are, but usually our WRs don’t get that much separation.I think this WR group can get more YAC in traffic than 2017.
My issue was more them playing 8 yards off. I know its the system but if I'm Iowa - I'm doing hitches all dang game if we have the same game plan. I know Petras sucks but presuming he has a pulse he should be able to complete hitches and flares.Yep the first half the DBs were just okay but honestly I think if you throw out that deep throw then they’d upgrade to good. You come to this conclusion based on CMC not asking a true freshman to try a fifty yarder in the first half of his very first game…when we’re having no trouble scoring points? Some thoughts:
3. Some of the special teams is a little concerning. It seems like we don't really have a field goal kicker?
I think the small issues Cooper had as a starter had more to do with Verdon being dinged up and not playing than McDonald’s absence. And in the long run, we’ll come out ahead. He looked really, really good. That secondary was shaping up to be stacked had the transfers not occurred. Imo Young and McDonald were missed a bit
I understand we played zone, but I was thinking we were athletic enough to play man….we escaped a couple of their drives with mistakes on their end and they should’ve had more points than they did. The game was never in question, but I’m wondering if we’re going to allow Iowa to chip away with short passes next week too.Because we played a basic zone. We gave up 10 points and 3 were from the interception. It’s points that win, not yards.
Yeah that’s by design. I think Reeder said in the post game interviews that they believed going in they were going to run it a bunch. They came out slinging it on short routes and it was semi effective. They still only scored a TD because their receiver made an incredible play and our two DBs sort of messed one another up and screwed up a PBU / INT.My issue was more them playing 8 yards off. I know its the system but if I'm Iowa - I'm doing hitches all dang game if we have the same game plan. I think we need to remember overall how young the defensive line is. Other than Lee and McDonald - not a lot of experience. Singleton played some, MJ obviously played at Minny but overall its really green. I would like to see more Peterson or someone with quick twitch to take some pressure off McDonald in pass rush
I thought his execution was really good. One bad decision all game on the interception which was more of a timing issue than anything. I've always thought "going through progressions" was overrated. Even NFL QBs throw to their primary receiver the vast majority of the time. They typically know where to go with the ball just by reading the defense more than looking from one receiver to the next. If the defense plays man, I'm throwing here, if they give us this look, I'm going here, etc... If you're consistently completing passes to your first target it's a sign that 1. The play call was good, 2. The QB made a good read of the defense, 3. Your receivers are doing a good job of getting open. Can someone who was at the game....How is Dekkers' execution compare with Purdy? Didn't see Dekkers go through progressions ..Don't know if that is a good thing or bad?
Jihrehl's run around therightleft end for about 20, getting down to the 1 yd line, with about 13' left in the game, was one of the best runs I've seen in a while. Very elite that run, and able to stop on a dime on the sideline, then go for about 10 more. Amazing. Great to let him have the 1 yard run for the TD to get to 35, on the next play.
Kid is a gamer and you can tell he has the talent. Really hoping he can have a great year!
Edit: meant LEFT end
He's banged up.Interesting that Verdon didn't play. Any news on that, maybe I missed?
