The fact that no British person under the age of 70 has ever known another monarch is crazy. That has to be 80-90% of the population.

It definitely feels to me like the end of the monarchy, whether officially or not. She was at least a tie back to an era where the monarchy had purpose. But Charles... ha.

What's your opinion of William?

Charles could last decades or... he could not.

Plus anyone 75 or under probably doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t Queen.

From an AP update I received today regarding information and styles for the whole "Royals" category.

With the death of the queen, her son Charles automatically becomes monarch, even though the coronation might not take place for months. It is not known whether he will choose to call himself King Charles III or some other name.

The line of succession

1. Prince Charles, the queen's eldest son, automatically becomes monarch, even though the coronation might not take place for months. Charles is married to Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. He is followed in the line of succession by:

2. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, the eldest son of Charles and the late Princess Diana. The next three places are held by William's children, in order of their birth:

  • 3. Prince George of Cambridge, born in July 2013.
  • 4. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, born in May 2015.
  • 5. Prince Louis of Cambridge, born in April 2018.
6. Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, the younger son of Charles and Diana. The next two places are held by Harry's children, in order of their birth:

  • 7. Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, born in May 2019.
  • 8. Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, born in June 2021
9. Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and her late husband, Prince Philip.

10. Princess Beatrice, elder daughter of Andrew and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson. Beatrice is married to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. She is followed in the line of succession by her daughter:

  • 11. Sienna Mapelli Mozzi
12: Princess Eugenie, the younger daughter of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Eugenie is married to Jack Brooksbank. She is followed in the line of succession by her son:

  • 13. August Brooksbank

Senior Royals

Queen Elizabeth II: The longest-reigning monarch in British history, she was also head of the Commonwealth and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Queen Elizabeth II on first reference, Elizabeth or the queen on subsequent references.

Prince Philip: The queen's late husband, who died at the age of 99 on April 9, 2021. They married in 1947. On first reference: Prince Philip. On second reference, Philip is acceptable. Stories may note that he also was known as the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Charles: Before becoming monarch, Charles was also known as the Prince of Wales. He is 73. His first wife was the late Princess Diana, mother of Princes William and Harry.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall: Prince Charles' second wife. They married in 2005 at Windsor Guildhall (not on the castle grounds). She is 74 and will be known as Queen Consort.

Prince William: The elder son of Charles and Diana. William, 39, is next in the line of succession after his father. He is also known as the Duke of Cambridge. William served in the military and worked as a helicopter rescue pilot before concentrating full time on his royal duties.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge: The former Kate Middleton is William's wife. They have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. In stories, AP often refers to Prince William and his wife, Kate. She is 40.

Prince Harry: Harry is the younger son of Charles and Diana. He served in the military for a decade before taking up royal duties. He is 37 and is also known as the Duke of Sussex.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex: The former American actress Meghan Markle married Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in 2018. In 2020 the couple quit as working senior royals and moved to the United States, where they have a charitable foundation. Meghan is 40. The couple have two children, Archie and Lilibet.

It was due to him already being pretty old. He is 70 and the thought would be that it would be better for the nation to skip Charles and go right to William.
Give Charles 5 years or so then go to William. You don't want to be the one to replace a legend.

Depending on who it was and when, you can also blame it on the mods/cw (whoever made the call). Because there was a thread in the cave that got merged with this one

E.g. Brian’s post at 105 was originally in the cave post.
Ah okay, my bad then. Not sure why I’m seeing a political thread though since I’m opted out.

I feel like the new season of Charles In Charge could be a real doozy.

No problem with him. If they had asked me (ha) I would have said they should skip Charles and go straight to William. But he's solely a tabloid Prince - I don't see what the point of the monarchy is anymore, even if it was useful in the past

I don’t know what happened but in order for this to stay outside of the cave it needs to drop it’s political comments moving forward. Hopefully it can be used as a tribute instead.
