Best ST, but we’ll face several better defenses.

We cannot have such self-inflicted errors in the Big 12
Uh.... whose got a better defense?

West Virgina - er, no.
Kansas - nope
Tech - no
Okie State - its good but not as good as last years so no
K States - good but not great
TCU - nope
Oklahoma - I expect them to be much better but I'm not sure I see them going from bad to great in 1 year
Baylor - Will be solid but has plenty of issues atm on the back end
Texas - very good showing versus Alabama, could be great but will they be consistent?

So no, while there are good defenses in the Big 12 - that is probably as good of a defense as well see. We'll see more flashy and more exotic defenses, more blitz and more pressure happy defenses but that is not the same as saying we'll see better

Texas, Baylor and KSU are better. OU more talented and with Venables likely as good by year end. There will be several games in which we need to scheme against personnel more. Against Iowa we got away with doing very little but brut force, both in run game and pass

FWIW we don't know if Iowa's defense is really that good after two games.

Add in that the challenge as the season goes on is teams pinning their ears back vs. ISU's tendencies over several games.

First flag football game today for my 9 year old. My 6 year old asked if they could do the same thing as the games that we go to watch (ISU games). He said his older brother should do the thing where you run real fast then stop and let someone fly by you. He was referring to Brock's Week 1 run. I honestly thought he didn't pay any attention to the games. Proud moment.

Um... only Kansas State is ranked in the top 15 nationally in defense as of now. We're 11th thru 2 weeks FYI.

Oklahoma -46th
Texas - 50th
Baylor - 41st

Baylor - 301 yards (Albany and BYU minus their top 2 offensive skill players other than QB)
Texas - 316 yards (Alabama and ULM)
Oklahoma - 305 (Kent State and UTEP)
Kansas State (South Dakota and Missouri)

Iowa is 6th.

South Dakota State historically is better than South Dakota and Albany and could most years probably beat ULM.

I get it. Iowa is the devil. Granted and noted. But the idea that their defense is less than what it is... how do you think they beat people, and I don't mean Minnesota or Northwestern? It sure as heck ain't their offense.

Fair point on both but I will reckon that Iowa's defense is THAT good because its the only way Iowa is ever good. For the most part. Its about as reliable as special teams at Virginia Tech under Beamer.

As for the tendencies - this is true but it also works the other way. Iowa State's offense will have seen the defensive tendencies over several games to prepare for as well. Its always move-counter move

One thing about iowa's defense...they're going to get worn down as the season goes on if the offense doesn't improve much. Our OL was mauling them. You can bet that a lot of B10 OLs will do the same. They're not going to survive on special teams, field position and turnovers. B10 teams will know all they need is 14 points to win and they'll just keep pounding.

It's the best LB unit we'll face, but it was down a future nfl player yesterday in Jacobs. Otherwise, we will face better D Lines, and Iowa's secondary, while really good, is a tad overrated.

Texas, Baylor, KSU. Likely a couple more with better talent.

Iowa is well coached and good at limiting snap count.

We’ll have to get better from the OC and Dekkers to have a chance in the Big 12. We scoreboard watch in this game, plus just make ridiculous mental mistakes
Lol

Give me a ******* break.

It’s not that Iowa is the devil. The dude has a seething hatred for Tom Manning and is like this week in, week out, rain or shine. He never ******* stops. Even in the games where the offense is clicking and putting up yards and points, he still ******* and moans about Manning. 90% chance Manning ****** his wife.

Jirehl looked really good. Solid, decisive.
Ex the fumble, which was really untypical, he really is playing well.
Feels like your typical RB, he gets more carries and he gets more of a groove going. Just kind of that "feel" is improving. Least of my worries for this year, think he will have some "wow" moments in conference play.

turnovers and our punter. . score should've been something like 30-7 ISU.
This is a great point. Get rid of the punt blocks and the fluky fumble into the end zone, and its at least 20-0 in the 4th qtr. Likely you get another turnover out of Petras as they press. Total blowout, and thats even with HDs 2 picks.

Gotta clean up the special teams. Still.

Ratings two weeks in? Come on. There’s many ways to interpret “good” but ratings two weeks in are not it. Yards/game are never it.

Iowa isn’t the devil. They are very well coached, and play elite complementary football. Which we play oblige to, given their offense is not a threat. That conflates how good that defense is. It’s why we can struggle to score on UNI nearly as much as Iowa (see 2021 and 2019).

You could argue they were the best at take-aways a year ago. But that is largely random and this year, for example, most self-inflicted. As was Hall’s fumble last year

The punter gets stuff for taking too long which is probably justified but ISU should have brought a guy or two in as extra blockers on that first punt.

Iowa got through really easily and the blocking itself was bad regardless.

I can't believe things were just as messy as last year and ISU came out of it, BUT Campbell alluded to how last year the team would tend to fold when things got weird and the difference was ISU didn't let that happen Saturday.
