Spot on. Trev is taking a big risk firing Frost after 3 games because now the clock starts on the coaching search — in mid-September. I know he’s filling the void by promoting an assistant but no one’s ever heard of Mickey Joseph. If the Huskers don’t win more than a few games the interim coach doesn’t buy him anything. I just can’t see Trev holding out til early December for Campbell or anyone else for that matter. What if he doesn’t get said candidate at that time?
Disagree there - Trev took a bigger risk bringing him back and having as much patience as he showed. There is no doubt that Trev's future is tied to this hire - he HAS to get it right or when the next coaching change happens, he will also be shown the door.

So I don't think he's going to be in a rush. Unless he has already had feelers out, and initial communication with someone and that is why he made the move because he wants to make sure he gets the person he rates highest.

Otherwise, there is no rush. He can take the rest of the season, vet potential candidates and see how the interim coach does. I think he'd have to win at LEAST 6 of nine. I don't think 5-4 gets you promoted to the HC role although maybe it does. If He goes 6-3, and maybe win a bowl game, that I think would make the interim tag easy to transition to a permanent role.

I doubt CMC goes because as of now, despite Nebraska / the Big 10 having more money etc Iowa State is easily in a better position than Nebraska - at least for now. Culture, stability, etc...

that said, I think if Trev really wants Campbell, he will certainly be willing to wait till December. Because again, whoever he targets, presuming they are currently coaching somewhere, this is the hire that determines Trev Albert's future as Nebraska's athletic director. So it can't be knee jerk hire. Which is why I said Nebraska has to go 6-3 the rest of the way because the trap for them would be to fall into the Coach O trap that USC and LSU fell into. So while I certainly knew who Mickey Joseph was - I figured they would have promoted the OC Whipple even if he had only been there briefly.

I will be stunned if all 3 of these things don't happen -

A) If Nebraska hires a coach BEFORE December
B) If Trev Alberts or some intermediary doesn't reach out to Campbell
C) If Matt Campbell, as he has previously done, turns them down and remains at Iowa State for the forseeable future.

Frost getting into the teeth of the big ten west schedule could have easily resulted in him ending the season on a high note. Losing to NW and Ga Southern probably left their ceiling lower than being bowl eligible. A worst case scenario would be 5 win season that ended beating Iowa or Wisconsin in late November. He couldn't risk Frost being good enough to bring back, he had to strike while the fan base was at their lowest.

Promoting Joseph is perfect, Trev gets some protection while they pat themselves on the back for the diversity hire (some fans are already pretending like they invented hiring minorities bc its the first time they've ever thought about it) , it keeps the current players more engaged and could keep possible recruits in the fold a bit longer. It also takes some of the pressure off of the season, if Joseph does well, he can stick around, if the struggles continue, oh well, everyone knows a change is coming. Plus, Joseph isn't just some guy, he is well known as a recruiter and has been a part of successful programs at multiple stops. It makes sense to see what you have in house if you think there is potential, especially because you're getting a hall pass on the rest of the season.

They took that risk every season, at no point was there ever a whiff of "turning the corner".

Yes and no. Whiles he's record in one score games is 5-22... that is a whiff. Its all it is but if he was an average coach and went 11-16 in one score games - they probably have made a couple of bowl games.

I agree that they weren't on the cusp of challenging for the playoffs or Big 10 title but in terms of at least making a bowl game and having a winning season - they weren't that far away. But the fact that they were continually coming up short and failing to ever make the adjustment to fix how and why they were always losing one score games -

that is the main reason there was never more than a whiff.

Would they have been better off cutting him loose at the end of last season?

It sure seems so, this just looks bad all around.

Way up there

They are bad but they get Rutgers and Indiana from the east and can play with every team in the west. As bad as they are, their offense gives them a punchers chances against some of those West teams that really struggle to score.

Yes, but when he agreed to take the pay cut and fired the majority of his offensive staff - he saved himself... albeit temporarily.

And I agree that it looks bad. When things have gotten to the point where you have your HC take a pay cut and fire people just to keep his job, most times IMO things are going poorly enough that in a few years time, even if it works out in the short term, as soon as one of those new hires left or that group of players left, you're going to find yourself right back where you were.

I get it from a money stand point - but then again that's why I figured they'd wait until after October 1 when his buyout dropped by $7.5 million. Apparently they really wanted him gone and wanted him gone NOW

Being dominated by Iowa threw a wrench in this from the start.

I amazes me that the B1G will be considered one of the two premier leagues in the near future. And yet, the west is full of really average football teams. Reminds me of the Big 12 North back in the day.

Here's another question - does Casey Thompson continue to start? I am curious to see, what, if any, changes are made tom their lineup and approach. If your Mickey - there's no risk. This is your chance to audition, if not for Nebraska, then for someone out there to hire you.,

If you are Casey Thompson, do you ask what the heck you got yourself into? Thinking he would get a waiver to transfer with a coaching change.

Casey Thompson seems like the least of their problems. Their receivers don't get separation and drop a lot of passes and their OL is inconsistent. But most of all, their Defense is just horrendous both against the run and the pass. If you watched all of the GSU game the other night (I did), GSU could score at will and only didn't when they tried to change things up for no apparent reason.

1st Offense - Tom Osborne to police officer:
"Hey officer. Can you hold off on the breathalyzer for about (looks at handy drink tolerance and metabolism chart) 5 hours and 45 minutes? Ndamukong is emotionally stunned by this traumatic event and really needs some time to work through this with the help of our emotional support staff."

Officer's response: "That's what you said the first time."

Tom Osborne: "Do I really need to call the governor?"

The Suh stuff was particularly egregious, but if you think cops in Ames aren’t using… discretion during run-ins with athletes, I have some NFTs to sell you.

True, but I haven't heard of the Story County Attorney's office issuing press releases regarding ISU coaches obstructing criminal prosecutions. Ask the prosecutors in Lincoln about old St Tom Osborne.
