Great analysis and thanks for all the time and expertise you put into it. Two words for some hope of a shorter term turnaround: transfer portal.
We have not been active in the portal in the last two years and that will change this winter/spring. We will have a couple defections as all schools do.

I think we need to go HEAVY in the portal for: OL, running back, TE, and DE.

Success in the Big 12 requires great QB play. Prior to Purdy, Iowa State consistently struggled with QB play. Dekkers has the arm talent, but he is young and struggling right now. We need the game to slow down for him and for him to regain his confidence. Unfortunately, I think this is all part of his development. I’m sure the staff and his teammates are all trying to help him.

Dekkers would be suited for the type of offense that KSU runs, with power QB runs, the kid has the size to be a nightmare once he gets to the second level, but this offense does nothing that allows him to shine and play to his strengths.

KState seems to always have a good oline and the QB is patient.
We have Waters still in Ames IIRC, he knows that better than anyone.

Yeah, I think his struggles are going to take a while unfortunately. You can see the arm strength, but unfortunately you see it on every pass. He doesn’t change from the 100mph straight line fast ball to the necessary arc, loft, or speed well enough yet - at least consistently.

Contrast that to somebody like Evers that not only makes the right reads, but his balls are thrown exactly how they need to be for the situation. He picked apart OU incredibly efficiently.

I think Dekkers can get there as his HS film showed the ability more than we’ve seen as a starter.

I heard KU has had 31 inbound the past two years. Interesting.

Wonder if people still think Dekkers is getting six figure offers from SEC teams after this year.

Dekkers is not the issue at all with this offense. He’s got plenty of talent to win in this league…. and definitely more than enough to have won the last two games.

I will reserve my blame for the guys making millions to figure out this issue. But that’s just me. I didn’t blame the kicker either against KU, I blamed CMC and Manning.

It is the coaches' job to put players in a position, with the knowledge, to win. We do that incredibly well on defense. I don't see it on offense. Something has to change. It seems every team runs some sort of exotic play against us and we don't do it at all. I know CMC is focused on the basics, but an exotic play that works brings the emotion and momentum up a notch and helps teams move forward. Kansas did it to us, and K-State, did as well. Even if they don't work, it is worth a shot because it shows the offense you trust them and are really trying to get every advantage to win.

We used this a couple years ago, it was a tight end pass. We have a tight end who was recruited as a QB. Seems odd that we did it before with success but don't try it now. Some play like that brings fun and mojo to the offense that it needs now. Seems some new wrinkle should be in every week. Something has to changes because this offense is not on page with the coaching staff.

It almost seems like, especially the OL, they have no fear of being benched. But with the quality of play I see each week; I would like to see some of the backups get a shot to put a little pressure on the starters. If the backup, who is younger, with more room to grow, is as effective as the upper classmen, maybe it will light a fire under their backside.

What is it going to take for the O line to become at least average? The explanation has always been that building skill and depth on the O line takes time, but this is now year 7. Isn't CMC now the second longest tenured coach in the league after Gundy? Seems like by year 7 this thing should at least be serviceable. CMC wants to be a physical, ball control kind of team so surely he knows this is a big priority.

Dekkers is starting to look tentative which results in him throwing soft passes, making most throws a touch pass rather than stepping into the throw and letting it rip. My son is a high school QB and I see that with kids at that level all the time. Perfect example last night was the pass down the sideline where it hit the defender in the helmet and our guy almost caught it when it bounced in the air. That ball needed to be thrown with more authority out in front of the receiver.

I’d like to see us 4 or 5 times a game run multiple guys on go routes and let Hunter air it out. Including out of twins or trips where you overload a side against the cover 4. Roll him out and let him set up outside the pocket to buy time if they’re concerned about protection. Right now he’s being overwhelmed with reads and is starting to watch the pass rushers. So give him some predetermined big throws. One PI on either of those last two possessions last night would have put us near FG range.

Agree. Deckers is quite talented and like all young QB’s, has obvious strengths and weaknesses. The play calling does nothing to steer away from his weaknesses and rarely schemes up designs for his strengths.

Hunter Deckers is absolutely not the offense’s issue right now. Deckers is clearly frustrated with the coaching, as he should be.

PS. Hunter absolutely demonstrated yesterday and every game this year that he can put beautifully perfect touch on the ball. This notion that he “guns” everything is ridiculous.

What I don’t get is I thought the line played well in the latter half of the 2020 season, and that we were set up to finally see development there. For whatever reason, it never happened.

I think my thoughts on Manning are well documented, but I agree that we lack a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Specifically, TE play has been poor and WRs (including Hutch at times) have struggled as well.

1) I haven't read anyone recognize there were two teams on the field yesterday. KSU is a very good defensive team. There are problems with our offense, no doubt, but this was a tough game to get well.
2) It's ridiculous to blame Dekkers. Very few quarterbacks can carry an offense by themselves, especially when we're trying to run a conservative, ball-control offense. We absolutely need a running game.
3) I don't believe the lack of a running game is primarily the fault of the backs. If the ball carrier is hit at or behind the line of scrimmage every play, it's going to be a long day for all but the most exceptional backs.
4) In my opinion, it's not the offensive linemen's fault either. An effective coach can create a running attack with schemes and technique.
5) That leaves the offensive coaches. I think we'll get it figured out, or at least better. I'm likely all alone on this, but I thought we showed some improvement over last week, considering we were playing against a much better defense.
6) We are a very well-respected team around the league. We were a big game for KSU and KU. It's different being the hunted.

We really don’t have that offensive break away player on offense this year. It really makes it difficult for the offense when you can condence the field on defense and not worry about getting burned deep.
