I felt like you were looking for more than just 'scoring more points than the opponent', but it appears I gave you too much credit. I will explain it better so you can understand.
In football, touchdowns are worth more points than field goals (6 vs 3). After the touchdown is scored, you can either kick the extra point which is worth 1 point, or go for a 2 point conversion which is obviously worth 2 points. Most times the team will just kick the extra point.
Now, while getting points from a field goal is sometimes nice, generally the goal is to score as many points as you can, which is why a touchdown is the preferred choice of the offense. The more points you score, the chances of winning are improved. In the case of the last two games, we only scored 1 touchdown which unfortunately was not enough to win either game. This may be a controversial statement, but I think if we had scored more touchdowns in each of these games, we probably would have won both. I hope this better explains my position.
