Unrelated to current discussion but: our small town store went to all self checkout Monday, by Friday they had two checkers back.

100% this. Lots of experience with this. IT folks in India will do EXACTLY what the business requirements say. They won't question it or point out any obvious dumb decision. They will just do it.
Hear this all the time from my wife who is in IT and has "colleagues" in Pune, India. They follow requirements and ask no questions even though obvious errors may be present. The 24 hr cycle of development is a pipe dream. Issues can't be addressed immediately, usually 24 hrs pass between e-mails requesting fixes or additional requirements. Offset of weekend hours can cause 4 day delay before addressing problems. Team meetings at 5 AM always something she looks forward to.

The one I go to put in some self-checkouts a while ago … year and a half, even two years, maybe? (I can’t keep track of time anymore.) They actually took them out within a couple of months. Earlier this year they came back, looks like they’re here to stay now. They do usually still have at least 2 lanes with checkers open all the time.

I don’t mind self-check if it’s just a few things, no produce to look up, and no coupons, but I still feel like I should be getting the employee discount for checking and bagging my own groceries.

On yet another note, the store spent most of the summer completely rearranging the interior of the store, to where I still haven’t figured out where everything is yet. I’m pretty sure they took that opportunity to slash the variety of brands of certain items they offer, which would have been really obvious if they hadn’t moved everything around but since they did it’s harder to notice there aren’t as many choices as they used to have.

Unless you have expert business analysts that can translate their needs intelligently to Indian developers, it can be a disaster.
Spot on. Add to the fact that Hyvee has no idea on how to manage overseas developers. This will be a disaster.

The new CEO is a moron. Thinks he's a tough guy, but cannot lead rats to garbage let alone Hyvee.

They absolutely did this at both stores in Ames. It’s like they’re aspiring to compete with Fareway and Walmart by combining the worst aspects of each.

Maybe I'm odd ... I like not having to interact with a cashier.
I'm a big fan of self check-out.

I have no problem with self-checkout. Usually I can get my stuff scanned, paid for, and bagged in the same amount of time it would take the checker just to scan the stuff. Only bummer is if I'm picking up any booze, and waiting for the person to come over to authorize it. That said, I usually do online pick-up (which was terrible but seems to be better lately).

I like self checkout. Otherwise I have to pretend I’m deaf when I go through the regular checkout. Yes, I feel bad when I do it and am probably a bad person, but it gets me out of human interaction.
That's why I always shop with headphones on.

#1 If you use the same hy-vee all the time, you can set the volume. Then before you scan any items, scan your card, and the volume will be at the level you previous set it to.

#2 Hy-Vee IT is now in such a bad place that previous companies that they used for contracting EE's are now refusing to work with Hy-Vee in the DSM metro. This is going to be a real **** show.
