We will find out how good of a coach Campbell is and if he can make tough decisions. Or will he just be stubborn and stick with his buddies?
I am afraid much of the blame for the offense lies with CMC. He approves and allows the play calling each week and game. He allows the OC, OL and QB coaching to continue without apparent check, or enough check.
What he needs to do, and I don't know if he will or can do it, is to replace the OC, replace the OL coach (and QB coach maybe also), and make some good hires. Then he needs to let go and let them do their jobs. Some direction and scheming control, yes, but otherwise get out of their way. [If he doesn't have his hands on the offense, however, then he needs to get more involved with it. But I don't think this is the case.]
I would be OK with Scheehaase being promoted to OC, and Manning demoted to OL coach, although I'm not sure if this would be ideal. If Scheelhaase is ready and has some new ideas and direction, sure, great. But he may be part of the same old offensive scheme and thought patterns that we currently have.
We might/do need new blood on the offensive coaching side. If the defense can do it at ISU, with Heacock and his coaches, the offense can to. But it needs a fresh start. A fresh start also means getting a ST coach. It at least means hiring coaches that can get better ST results.
Coach Campbell needs to look inwardly, make some strong changes, and cut his losses now. If he does not, he will likely lose current players, and incoming recruits, for next year.
