I’ve only been eating Mabe’s for the last 2-3 years so I’ll take your word that it used to be better but saying it’s crap now is just not true. Maybe it is to you because its not the same but we still get it every time we visit Decorah. Next time we’ll have to try the places Al suggested and compare.
Mabe's isn't crap didn't say that. Sort of middling. Have fun! I agree The New Brew Pub is super. My In-laws live within walking distance near the airport. Nice.

Seems like Mistress Taproom is way, way behind. New American is nothing special. Going to be tough for either of those places to compete against Firetruckers setup.
Well, unfortunately I called that one:

New American Brewing Co.

Announcement: Taproom Closing!
After a very fun and adventurous journey we have decided that we need to take a step back, regroup, and make a new plan for the brewery moving forward. We have had a great time sharing our beer with the guests in our taproom but the time has come for a change.

Our last day of operating the taproom will be Saturday Sept. 1st. So from now until then we want to say thank you to everyone that has supported us along the way. That means we are going to be discounting everything, beer, growlers, glassware, t-shirts, cans, etc.

Thanks again for your support and we hope to see you in the taproom soon.

Curious (and sorry if I missed the discussion), what do people believe is the cause of the failure for New American?

My uneducated guess – combo of so-so beer and too high of a lease payment. I can’t believe it is cheap (or even reasonable) to open a place in Prairie Trail. Wouldn’t surprise me if they were paying the most per/foot of any micro brew in the metro.

Their beer was not good enough to get people in the door. If you’re going to have a boring strip mall type tap room you need great beer and good food like Barntown.

I've been to Barntown a few times for beer but wife and I went for lunch a few weeks ago. Man, that place is great.

I remember New American having some pretty good beer in their pre-tap room days. Seemed like it fell off after that, and the tap room was really boring.

I wondered how long they would make it in Ankeny with average beer and that huge space. Firetrucker doesn’t have great beer either but at least they have a nice patio and it’s right on the bike trail.

There just aren't many great options in Ankeny.

I enjoyed stopping into mistress from time to time, but I'll admit it's been a couple years since I'd been in there.

There is a lot of really bad craft beer in Iowa. Very few of these places are sustainable long term wise. Nationally, craft beer sales are tanking, it will take some time because Iowans are stupid loyal but a lot of these places will close.

Just a weekly reminder that Ankeny is awful. I was up there yesterday for soccer and my god it just keeps getting worse.

Uptown Garage isn't too bad. They at least carry other Iowa beers so have a decent selection.

Yeah, uptown is my go to for beer here. I just don't think of them as a brewery even if they do have a couple of their own beers.

So much bad beer in Iowa. It seemed like when craft beer was booming any knucklehead who could brew an amber with a Mr. Beer homebrew kit was opening a taproom. It also seems like the craft beer market is getting cornered into the haze bomb ipa's and pastry stouts which have a place, but I'm not looking to drink a sugar bomb every time I open a beer.

Perhaps my palate has changed, but I would also argue the quality amongst our "big breweries" has fallen off as well. Big Groves IPA's all taste the same and have this odd quality to them. Easy Eddy almost tastes soapy to me now. $12-13 for a 4 pack of PseudoSue that's been sitting on HyVee's shelves for 4 months just isn't real appealing to me any more either.

The pub pass really bit us in the ass this year, they over sold it and we have given out more than 10 grand in free beer over our budget. That didn't help our neighbors, but we have had a 7% increase in sales this year.
